Jetrader recently spoke with GA Telesis President and CEO Abdol Moabery
about his 25-year history in aviation and where he sees the industry headed.
How did your career in the aviation industry begin?
I started in the early '90s working for Aviation Systems International,
where I learned the ins and outs of selling aircraft parts. Ultimately,
aviation is one of those things that once you get near it you can't
get out of it no matter how hard you try. It sort of happened by
accident, and that was 25 years ago. I haven't looked back. It has
been the most unbelievable journey for me.
The nuances of the industry are something that's almost unrivaled.
There is an airline in every country in the world, and it's 24/7. I've
always been that sort of high-energy guy, so it really attracted me.
Back in the early '90s, the international markets weren't that
developed. For example, India had just started their open skies
era, and a whole bunch of private airlines popped up to compete
with Air India. I [essentially] spent a year of my life in India
trying to develop that market. These countries were just looking
for somebody to pay attention to them, and I did. Ultimately,
I became very successful at what I was doing - selling parts.
In 1997, I was approached by CS Aviation, which was owned
by George Soros's hedge fund - the first hedge fund that
really participated in aviation in a meaningful way. Frankly,
working at that company was like getting a Ph.D. in business. It was the most incredible experience, both in terms
of my professional career, and in terms of my education
on how business really works.
What led you to start GA Telesis, and what
were your initial goals for this venture?
I came up with the idea for GA Telesis when I was at
CS Aviation. I wrote the business plan and said, "This
is what I think we ought to do." They politely declined
and gave it back to me and said, "It's not for us." So
I left and did it myself.
How do you account for the remarkable
growth that GA Telesis has seen in its
15-year history?
From day one, I surrounded myself with the
best people I could. I never claim or try to be
the smartest guy in the room, but I like to be in
