ISTAT is proud to be a not-for-profit member organization delivering the most costefficient networking opportunities for all
members, while investing in the future of
aviation through the ISTAT Foundation. The
ISTAT Board of Directors is also committed
to ensuring that attendees derive maximum value from their participation in ISTAT
events and regularly reviews all aspects of
our many offerings. This includes review of
conference rates for the range of registration options offered. From small companies
and the self-employed to large corporations, the board recognizes the variance
in everyone's ability to pay for conference
fees. Thus, the board regularly considers
and enacts, as needed, policy adjustments
to fairly manage member resources.
In 2017, the board specifically looked
at conference offerings for media, as
"media" has become a classification that
is somewhat ambiguous. With a multitude
of changes in the landscape of publishing, determining who actually qualifies
as "media" has been nearly impossible for
ISTAT to quantify and fairly evaluate who
merits free admission. For every conference, ISTAT receives an ever-growing list
of requests for free media admissions, and
ISTAT is not well placed to determine who
qualifies and who does not.
What the ISTAT Board of Directors was
able to determine is that most of the
requests for free media admission were
coming from for-profit organizations. After
conversations with several media representatives on the offerings that were provided
to them, it was concluded that providing
free access to media, and not doing so for
other important constituents who have
very limited budgets, was not equitable.
The Board, therefore, decided to replace its

complimentary media registration with a
media policy that includes a fee to allow
media to attend, although ISTAT does not
require media membership to get the best
member rate. The fee was enacted at a rate
that covers the costs of food and beverage
service for media attendees. This fee is the
lowest rate offered for each event - one
which media may take advantage of at any
point leading up to a conference.
With the policy implemented in mid2017, the board continues to be committed to working with the media to offer
fair value for membership and conference
fees. The board has engaged in continued
dialogue with members and media representatives since implementation of the
policy and continues to welcome thoughts
