Copa Airlines'
Pedro Heilbron Advocates
Flexibility and Smart Growth

Latin American airlines have felt the
turbulence of unstable economies of
late - the crisis in Brazil, the crisis in
Venezuela, devaluating currencies in many
countries - but by being agile, returning leased aircraft, deferring deliveries of
next generations and strategically reducing flight frequencies, Pedro Heilbron, CEO
of Copa Airlines, believes air carriers will
return to cruising altitudes.
Copa Airlines, based out of Panama City,
Panama and heralded as 'The Hub of the
Americas,' was one of Latin America's fastest growing air carriers a few short years
ago, but now Heilbron would venture to say
Copa is Latin America's smallest airline, a
point in which he takes pride because he
sees slow growth as smart growth.
From 2011 to 2014, Copa experienced
annual, double-digit growth, even upwards
of 20 percent some years in ASMs (available
seat miles). That's when Latin American
economies were strong and the region was
leading the world in economic growth. Then
came the end of 2014 and it was as if the
whole aviation sector hit clear air turbulence, which was hard to predict and hard
to avoid.
"We went from double-digit growth ... to
very little growth in 2015 and basically no
growth in 2016. So how did we accomplish
that?" Heilbron asks. "Because it's not like
we were planning for it."
"We have always had a very flexible fleet
plan," he answers, "where we have enough
deliveries and lease expirations to be able
