overcome and with an easier afternoon ahead,
which proved to be only half correct. The route
that followed was downhill, but interspersed
with enough uphill bits to make it a challenge.
The roads were varied from wide downhills,
where Group A riders contorted themselves
to extract the maximum speed on their
bikes, to detours on farm tracks through the
picturesque vineyards; riders looked forward
to tasting the production from the vineyards
as they progressed toward the finish.
The route finished with a nasty 500-meter
climb to the table set outside with enough
beer and wine to rehydrate the group. The
individual retelling of the ride was interrupted to give Alma Aliguzhinova (Air
Astana) a standing ovation. Not a regular
cyclist, she completed as much of the course
as was physically possible. That was the true
spirit of shared experience that will remain
in the memory of all participants.
The tour was not just about a good
workout, beautiful scenery and networking during this unique experience; the
group ultimately raised $10,000 for the
ISTAT Foundation.

In Group A, a blistering pace was being
set. Mark Lennon (Macquarie) hung on to the
leaders, and Steven Graham (Avolon) saw red
as Dan Coulcher followed Matt Barnes (BOCA)
over the top. Cian Coakley (Orix) cruised to
the top without need to use the trainers he
had chosen to wear.
Group B was spread across the mountain, everyone in their own world of effort.
Progress was not helped by the switchback
roads that brought brief glimpses of fellow
group members hundreds of meters above or
below. Thomas Zimmer (Vedder Price) and Paul
Briggs (Bird+Bird) were considering the legal
definition of Inhumane Treatment. Everyone
made the summit and looked forward to the
first coffee stop that lay 3km (2 miles) beyond
the summit - this was the first real downhill
slope and was savoured by all concerned.
Group A was promptly joined at the coffee
stop by Group B, which proved the "more
haste, less speed" approach of the second
group. Ride stories were exchanged; spirits
were high with the main obstacle having been
