H

ave you or a loved one ever been sick? When you
are, the symptoms can be uncomfortable and
sometimes painful. Waiting for a diagnosis can
be scary and leave you feeling completely out of
control. Treatment can be difficult and may take longer
than desired. But if you follow the regiment laid out for
you, recovery comes and you eventually feel better.
More and more I hear managers and supervisors
describe their work environment as if it has an illness.
The daily symptoms include employees who don't come
to work on time, are constantly distracted and some
even refuse to follow the rules. Welcome to the NEW
workforce!
In order to gain an accurate diagnosis of what is really
happening, we must first find out what makes young
employees think and act so differently today than those
from previous generations? Once we know the reasons
for the symptoms, we can begin to treat them in hopes to
create a more successful and pleasant work environment
for everyone.
Our diagnosis is going to focus on five areas where
these "work-related symptoms" or differences tend to
be the most visible. Keep in mind that most of these
differences are brought on by the way we were raised.
None are right or wrong. They are just different and must
be treated with a different dose of leadership medicine
than what has been doled out for ailments in the past.
