Saskatchewan and the Mechanical by Jeffrey Reed A ccording to the Conference Board of Canada, Saskatchewan is on track to boast the fastest-growing economy in Canada in 2013 and 2014, with real GDP growth projected at 3.4 per cent this year alone. In terms of population growth, Saskatchewan is no slouch, either. Over the past five years, Saskatchewan’s population has grown by more than 80,000 people, thanks in large to international immigration. Yet, despite a vibrant economy and growing population, both the private and public sectors recognize an alarming decrease in the availability of skilled labour. It’s a death knoll that’s been ringing for more than a decade. The mechanical contracting industry is not immune to this contemporary crisis, with trades including refrigeration mechanic, sheet metal worker and plumbing all considering options needed to survive well into the future. Perhaps now more than ever, government and employers are working together to close those gaps – in particular in how immigration rules and regulations can help ease the pain of mechanical trades here in Saskatchewan. There are a number of new and ongoing government programs in place that deal with immigration and how a better overall system can help keep the Saskatchewan economy strong. Slated for an April 1 launch, the federal government’s new Start-Up Visa will link immigrant entrepreneurs with private sector organizations in Canada who have experience working with start-up fi rms and who can offer resources.
