Helping To Shape the Talent of Tomorrow By Stephen Murdoch S everal years ago, the Mechanical Contractors Association America (MCAA) launched a student chapter program. The program, which now boasts 47 student chapters across the United States, has proven beneficial for students, companies and the industry. In response to the student chapter program’s success, the Mechanical Contractors Association of Canada quickly followed suit. Stephen C. Veldhuis PhD, PEng, Associate Professor and Director at the McMaster Manufacturing Research Institute knows fi rsthand the many benefits of establishing a student chapter. “As the Faculty Advisor for the McMaster Chapter of the Mechanical Contractors Association of Hamilton, I’m a firm believer in what the concept has to offer. As a result of the changing demographics in our industry, there is a real need to attract the brightest students into the profession of mechanical contracting. For us and others from coast to coast, one of the most proven methods has been orienting students into our field so that top students make it their first career choice,” Veldhuis explains. Having worked with MCAH since 2007, Veldhuis understands how valuable the program is to the association, contractors and students. “We are sending a clear message to the industry. We are letting them know we support their efforts to grow and understand the importance of working with all pertinent stakeholders. Contractors have the enviable position of working hand-in-hand with some of the best students that have a keen interest in the mechanical contracting industry. In fact, I have noticed that some contractors attend our events and sit in the back and just observe the students to see how they interact and respond to mechanical contracting topics, then the next thing I know, the best ones get job offers,” Veldhuis says. As for the students, they too benefit from the student chapter program. “We are providing students with a medium to interact with the leaders of our industry,” says Veldhuis. “From there, they develop valuable contacts for potential future employment. Also, it helps for them to hear from folks that have been in the industry for many years and the potential ups and downs in the economy they may face.” Veldhuis and the McMaster Chapter of MCAH have worked tirelessly to put a sustaining model in place and their efforts are paying great dividends. “We have all the right pieces of the puzzle in place. An association staff member that plays a pivotal role, great connections with local contractors in our community, the support of a post-secondary institution and, of course, students. Together, we work to keep students engaged in what the program has to offer on a yearly basis and we have made sure students get credit for their efforts in their respective courses,” Veldhuis concluded.
