Lobbying Initiative -
Safety Services
Fragmented might be the best adjective to describe the delivery of safety
services in Saskatchewan. Multiple permits, various agencies responsible for
inspections and lack of consistency is
what faces contractors when working
on projects. However, for the past 18
months the MCAS, along with representatives from the Electrical Contractors
Association, Gas and Electrical
Inspections, Building and Licensing,

Ministry of Health and the Technical
Safety Authority of Saskatchewan, have
opened a dialogue. The group has been
meeting on a regular basis to discuss
ways in which improvements can be
made to refine, streamline, and improve
the delivery of services. From the point
of view of the MCAS, we would like to
see all services fall under one, selffunded agency. Meetings will continue
through 2018 and we are optimistic that
there will be some changes coming in
the future.

Prompt Payment Saskatchewan was
formed by eight provincial associations
in May of 2016. The group, co-chaired
by MCA Saskatchewan Board Member
Ryan Tynning, has developed and
agreed upon five basic principles on
which prompt payment legislation is
being developed in Saskatchewan.
Those principles are:
*	 	A payment cycle
* The right to suspend work
*	 	A dispute mechanism
*	 	Interest on overdue payments
*	 	Transparency and disclosure
The group has been in consultation with
the Province and the government has
committed to introduce legislation in the
spring of 2018. We are optimistic that
not only will it be introduced but that it
will be passed during the session as well.

Raising the profile of the association
has been an ongoing challenge. With
other associations vying for membership dollars, the MCAS Marketing
Committee developed a strategic
marketing plan in 2017. The successful
campaign combined radio and local
newspapers throughout the province.
The first radio advertisement, which featured MCAS President Scott Kerr, ran
in Saskatoon, Regina and surrounding
areas in early summer. The advertisement explained who we are and what
we do.
The second part of the campaign
encouraged consumers to hire MCAS
members. The radio portion of the
campaign tied into print ads that were
published in all the local Saskatchewan
community newspapers. Listeners and
readers were encouraged to visit the
member section of our website when
looking for a mechanical contractor.
Prior to launching the advertising
campaign, updates were made to the
MCAS website which improved the
search function so that potential clients can search for contractors in their
area based on their specific service or
install needs. The number of visits to
the members section of our website,
since the ad campaign began, and compared to the same period last year, has
increased by 122.5 per cent.
