the learning curve of the digital supply
chain is intimidating, but each technology represents a significant disruption
to today's industrial paradigm.
The power of people
Of course, leveraging technology is a
key for achieving success, however the
reality of business and the imperative
of an ecosystem mindset highlight that
the human element remains as important today as ever. Stefan Schrauf and
Philipp Berttram of PWC take this one
step further to acknowledge the holistic
change an organization must undertake
to truly succeed in the digital supply
chain. "If companies are to make the
digital supply chain a reality, they can't
just gather technologies and build capabilities. They must also find people with
the right skills, and manage the shift

to a culture that's willing to carry out
the effort."5
For manufacturers, finding the
people with the right skills is becoming harder by the day. A key factor is
the significant demographic shift currently impacting the industrial workforce from "Baby Boomer" retirement,
as well as a widening technical and
engineering skills gap. According to a
2015 study conducted by Deloitte and
the Manufacturing Institute, by 2025
as many as 3.5 million manufacturing
jobs will need to be filled, while the
labor pool will provide for only 1.5
million workers leaving a deficit of
nearly 2 million jobs unfilled.6 Supply
chain education is an important tool
to address the labor and talent challenges facing manufacturing today,
but like industry, education must
embrace an ecosystem mindset in
its approach.

Education: a triangle
of collaboration
In their 2016 report, Workforce
Development and Ecosystem Framework,
researchers Julie Lostumbo and Peter
Joyce of the North Carolina-based RTI
International point out that "at the
center of a highly functioning workforce development ecosystem is close
collaboration between demand- and
supply-side actors."7 In manufacturing, industry provides demand, while
universities, community colleges and
community workforce development
organizations are the key players supplying training, talent and labor. Active,
robust collaboration between each of
these entities is important to establishing a true ecosystem.
The good news is that these connection points are well-established
and flourishing. The past decade has
seen significant coordination and
