As the co-owner of MHI member
Battery Watering Technologies, Julie
Elliott works alongside her husband
Scott Elliott, president and CEO. While
her official title is "human resources
manager," it's by no means her only duty.
"When asked what we do for a living, Scott and I often laugh. We literally
'do' whatever it takes. As anyone who
starts their own business knows, you

do anything necessary to make it successful," she chuckles.
Elliott notes that when they started
their company in 1999, initially as a
distributor for a foreign manufacturer, "I basically handled the office
and warehousing duties for the first
six months; entering orders, packaging,
shipping, invoicing. Along the way, I've
worked in customer service, accounts
payable/receivable, marketing and
human resources," she recalls. "Today,
I conduct interviews and take care of
employee enrollments for benefits, plus
write marketing copy and review every
piece of literature that goes out."
Her entrance into a supply chain
career happened "completely by accident," Elliott recalls. After graduating college her first job was with
Douglas Battery, starting as a temporary employee in the HR department, then moving into marketing
and customer service before taking
a sales position with Nextel. Having
followed a career path cross-country
from Winston-Salem, NC to Kansas
City, MO to San Francisco, CA, the
couple returned to North Carolina
when they started their business. As

sales grew steadily, they bought their
first warehouse in 2006.
"In 2007, we ended our distributorship agreement and began manufacturing our own products in Michigan. In
2017, we moved our manufacturing from
Michigan to North Carolina," Elliott
says. "What started as a job in supply
chain ultimately became my career."
One of the most interesting things
about supply chain, she continues, is the
diversity and breadth of opportunities
within the industry-as evidenced by
her own career path. "I think the term
'supply chain career' is misunderstood
by the mass majority. There are so many
different jobs in this industry, including
customer service, purchasing, accounting, graphic arts, engineering, shipping/
receiving, machine operators, production and quality control," notes Elliott.
"When you break down the job titles
and descriptions, it sounds much more
interesting and less industrial-which
makes it more appealing," she continues. "As an industry, we need to continue to educate the kids coming out of
high school and in college about the job
opportunities in our industry in order
to attract the best people, regardless of
gender or race."
Additionally, Elliott says that the
variety of job functions within the supply chain industry makes it easier for
people who haven't necessarily specialized within a certain academic path to
find their way within the field.
"My knowledge within the industry
is built both on education and on-thejob experience. I received an associate
degree from Forsyth Technical Institute
and received a bachelor's degree in
business administration with a major
in marketing from Appalachian State
University," she explains.
"One of the best classes I ever took
was in spelling and grammar. It was
torture, but so valuable. No matter
what position you are in, it is imperative to make your point concisely with
no grammatical mistakes or misspelled
words," adds Elliott. "Today I take marketing classes for fun and fulfillment,
and HR classes to increase my expertise to benefit the company. You should
never stop learning."
