our students out to our distribution
center and put them in a work-type
environment with supervisors. They
get to put a lot of what they've learned
into practice."
Shaner said he thinks the information on social media and on presenting a good image is particularly useful
for students. He will emphasize, for
example, that students need a professional email address when they're corresponding with potential employers.

"Many of them have crazy email
addresses, and they've never thought
how that might look to a hiring manager," he said.
"The students don't realize the
importance of image," he added. "In
our society, everything has become
more casual, but when they get to the
workplace they have to realize that
they need to present a more professional appearance. It's not like social
media, where communication is very
informal."

It can be hard to convince students
accustomed to sitting behind a computer and dressing however they want
that people will be judging them based
on their appearance. "Students have to
be able to make the next leap and be
able to talk to people face-to-face; they
have to look people in the eye and look
professional," Shaner said.
Technology has contributed to the
lack of expertise in social interactions,
said Otto. "It's easy to be social on a
phone or a computer; it's different when
you are in a work environment where
you have to watch body language,
watch your tone of voice-all those
different things," he observed.
Otto said that Goodwill of Southern
Piedmont's clients are in much different situations than young people
just graduating from high school.
But like the students, his clients often
don't possess the soft skills needed to
land and keep jobs. "We work with
clients with barriers to employment,
the underserved individuals in our
community, those with criminal backgrounds-the unemployed, underemployed and people living in poverty,"
he explained.
Goodwill is located close to MHI
headquarters and works closely with
the association and with area employers
and smaller businesses to train workers
with the workplace skills they'll need
to be successful in their jobs. Since soft
skills are a big part of that, Goodwill is
this year expanding its one-week training program into two weeks. Parts of
MHI's Volume 4 soft skills training
will be incorporated into that new
curriculum.
Employees' understanding of and
willingness to conform with expected
workplace behavior makes a real difference to their employers' satisfaction
with them. Students and other job
seekers who follow the advice offered
in the Volume 4 soft skills curriculum of "Fundamentals of Warehouse
& Distribution" will improve their
chances of success not only in their
new jobs but also in their long-term
careers.
