Although he's also disinclined to
make generalizations, Hopper believes
that when it comes to Millennials
there exists a mid-generational shift
in mindset. "Overall, Millennials tend
to enjoy teamwork and collaboration,
but when it comes to spending habits
and job loyalty, those born earlier who
entered the workforce before the Great
Recession seem to be a bit more willing
to take risks, and those born later-who
watched their parents lose jobs in the
economic downturn-appear to have a
more cautious approach," he explains.
"Even though GenZ is still evolving, its members have been showing
themselves to be more independent
and entrepreneurial than Millennials,"
continues Hopper. "They're also considerably more diverse and accepting of
diversity. Generally, that speaks to the
impact of globalization with the uptick
in immigration that began toward the
end of the 1900s, as well as the subsequent exposure to an even broader variety of cultures in the U.S."
While there are currently few GenZ
employees at C.H. Robinson, Freeman
has spent a considerable amount of
time reading up on them (she recommends the book GenZ @ Work: How
the Next Generation Is Transforming the
Workplace by David Stillman and Jonah
Stillman).

"GenZ shares many of
the same traits around adaptability, technology, innovation
and creativity as Millennials, but
they're a bit more pragmatic and realistic," she notes. "They're also more interested in finding solutions by themselves.
They're the do-it-yourself generation that
grew up learning different skills by watching YouTube."
Therein lies one of the biggest differences between Millennials and GenZ,
explains John Frehse, senior managing
director at Ankura Consulting.
"Unlike the previous generations,
GenZ has never experienced a world
without the Internet and its ability to
deliver instant access to information anytime, anywhere. Millennials may have
early memories of less Internet access,
but that quickly disappeared as the Web
exploded in the early 2000s," he says.
"The Internet fueled a dramatic cultural transformation just as Millennials
were entering the workforce and gaining
spending and decision-making power;
that capacity has been true throughout
the GenZ's entire life," Frehse continues.
"Both demographics, however, expect to
have that level of instantaneous access to
information in their workplace."
Millennials and GenZ: Aligning
their key attributes with supply
chain careers
For an industry like supply chain that
is continuously changing, technologydriven, focused on problem solving, and
growing (both in size and importance at
the C-suite level), the aforementioned

attributes make Millennials and GenZ
an ideal fit for positions throughout
the field.
"The industry has seen steady job
growth over the years. Individuals
believe there will continue to be jobs
available as there is a skills shortage
and a talent gap," notes Abe Eshkenazi,
CEO of APICS. "Supply chain is a smart
choice for anyone who values stability
but wants an exciting career."
Millennials are already starting to
figure that out, he continues, citing
APICS' Millennials in Supply Chain
report, released last October.
"We found that most Millennials
chose to enter the field, with 66 percent
of them reporting they earned an undergraduate or graduate degree in logistics
or supply chain management," he says,
noting that a previous study found only
19 percent of senior-level supply chain
professionals had earned a degree in
the field or a closely related discipline.
"Many Millennials who are seeking or
presently hold jobs in the industry did
their research, sought education and
training in their areas of interest, and
plotted out their ideal career path."
Further, 66 percent of Millennials
responding to the APICS survey said
they enjoy their supply chain position
because of the ability to work with the
latest technologies, something they
inherently prefer. And, as noted before,
Millennials and GenZ value opportunities to learn and further develop their
skills. The APICS' study backs that up,
continues Eshkenazi, who notes, "We
were pleased to see that 87 percent of
Millennials surveyed feel that working
in supply chain will help with their personal growth and development."
