"We're seeing a slow but gradual
increase in the size of ships calling on the
East Coast," said Frank Harder, principal
at The Tioga Group. But will it ever fully
maximize its potential? "It would depend
on how well the terminals prepare to
handle the peak loading of the larger
ships. You'll see shippers have options
to use multiple ports. Shippers who are
smart will have options and redundancy
to move cargo between coasts and also

"If you look at the numbers, the volume
is increasing."
Steve Sashihara, CEO of Princeton
Consultants, said that the long-term
future outcome of the Panama Canal
remains to be seen. "It really is being
driven by a few different players: the
canal authority and how they'll price it,
and the ocean liners, the ports."
As with other aspects of intermodal,

said. "Every shipper needs to have a
