WHAT'S NEW & IMPROVED:
BY AMY DREW THOMPSON
We're all NoMad here...
The James New York - NoMad has
completed a massive renovation of its
360-room property. Stem to stern, visitors
and guests will revel in the opening of
Scarpetta's. This café-bar originally
opened in the city's Meatpacking
District, and the addition of The Seville
cocktail lounge, so named for the
building's history - it began life in 1904
as the Seville Hotel - offers up a swanky
location for post-meeting wind downs.
Speaking of meeting space, the James
has 5,000 square feet of it, all of which
was designed by Thomas Juul-Hansen.
Last Summer on the Lake...
Until Next Summer
Fans of the Finger Lakes, and its beautiful
Inn on the Lake in the town of Canandaigua,
can get in one last meeting before Fall 2018.
The property is set to close come autumn
for a major renovation during which it will
morph into a luxury, boutique-style inn.
Built in 1970 as the Sheraton Canandaigua
Inn, it is expected to reopen in early summer
2020 to offer "world-class facilities and
amenities," an announcement read. Its
location adjacent to the New York Wine
& Culinary Center bodes well for planners
looking to capitalize on its foodie cred. The
property's current meeting space clocks in
at 7,000 square feet.
It had been a decade since the property
had undergone any kind of facelift but
now, after 15 months and $15 million,
the Albany Marriott has completed
its renovations. Among its many new
and remodeled features: furnishings,
HVAC, elevators, carpet, upholstery and
more. Its guest rooms boast completely
overhauled baths - glass-enclosed walk-in
showers with lovely, Italian-tile detail.
On the tech side, faster Wi-Fi and mobile
check-in are now available. Meeting
planners should note this property has
over 27,500 square feet of flexible event
space, with on-site planners and caterers.
Rebranding in Buffalo
Metamorphosis is in progress at
the 100-room Buffalo Niagara Medical
Campus as the Doubletree Club by
Hilton Hotel rebrands itself as the
Wyndham Garden Buffalo Downtown
Hotel. The name officially changed in
February, following some $1.5 million in
renovations - though more are likely to
come over the next year. The lobby and
public areas, guestrooms and all four of
its meeting rooms have already benefited
from the money infusion, so, too, did its
bar/restaurant. Also on tap for downtown
Buffalo, an upscale Wyndham, as work
continues on the renovation of the
former AM&A's Department Store into a
340-room flagship property. @
TRAVEL TRENDS: WHAT'S HOT
GOING MOBILE AGAIN. This time,
we're talking about your phone.
According to Trekk Soft's survey,
79 percent of mobile users researched
and then booked some form of travel
right from their smartphones - up
from 70 percent in 2016. The power
of mobile tech is only getting more
concentrated; the more research
(and eventual action) your attendees
can do from their devices, the higher
numbers - and likely customer
satisfaction - you are likely to see.
POPULARITY. Increasingly, travelers
are looking to be part of the world's
solution - seeking out responsibly
designed experiences that may
even be part of a solution (perhaps
by funding an indigenous culture or
restoration of a damaged ecosystem).
Attendees - whether you're planning
a hard-trekking incentive trip or a
meetings-driven event at a boutique
property in a city - care about the ripples
their travel makes. Thoughtfully crafted
experiences are of value. @
GOING MOBILE. No, we're not
talking about your phone - though
folks will carry, snap and upload
shots of everything they're doing
and seeing along the way. Walking
tours, free and self-guided in
particular, are big among travelers
these days. Whether your event is
in a large, cultural capital where
the sites are obvious, or a small,
out-of-the-way destination where
off-the-path, unique experiences
will make your attendees the envy of
their IG and FB feeds, destinations
where folks can get away from the
meeting room or trade-show floor
for a spell to amble and discover are
