WHAT'S NEW & IMPROVED:
RENOVATIONS REPORT
Upstate Update
As of press time, the Adelphi Hotel in
Saratoga Springs, was slated to open in
September following a massive, five-year,
$30 million renovation.
The Adelphi first opened in 1877 and
was purchased most recently by RBC
Hotels, which planned year-plus-long
update. Old structures, alas, caused
the project to be extended, but
much of the "old" was saved and
lots of "new" was added.
And by new, we mean luxury and
state-of-the-art. Nearly all rooms boast
European-style soaking tubs, Italian stone
and marble bathrooms, and a focus on
sustainability. Public spaces - bars and
restaurants, a ballroom - all underwent
transformations as well.

Meetings are But a Dream
The 220-room Dream Midtown
NYC has been updated, having
completed a $27 million renovation of
its lobby and - meeting planners take
note - entertainment venues. Spaces

available for private events include the
2,500-square-foot Fishbowl bar, lounge
and game room. A 5,000-gallon fish tank
helps the space live up to its name, the
exposed-brick bar helps guests relax, mix
and network. The intimate Rickey lounge
is a cozy 1,100 square feet and ideal for
cocktail gatherings, pre- or post-meeting.

Luxury for the Millennium

Millennium Hilton New York One Plaza,
which recently completed a $68-million
phased renovation that began in 2012.
The modernization took care to preserve
the property's original architecture,
while upgrading guest rooms, public
areas, and meeting and event spaces. Its
largest space, the aptly named Diplomat
Ballroom, can accommodate up to
300 guests reception-style.

TRENDS IN TEAM BUILDING?
THINK DEEPER

T

eam building isn't all about
cooking or karaoke. It's
about outcomes.
Reaping real results. Whether it's a
geocaching event, something rooted in
a charitable cause or an escape room
event, teambuilding at its core should
be less about the activity on which it is
centered around and more about the long
term results of the interaction.
Quite often, one-time, fun-time
activities don't cut it. These days,
in lieu of an annual event, more
companies are signing on for longer

assignments, challenges developed
specifically, often by consultants, for
those the team is dealing with on a
regular basis.
Social ≠ team building. While
some employees often enjoy the
interactive activity - sports, parties
and such - others may not appreciate
the seemingly "forced" participation.
And while benefits can include the
opportunity for folks to get to know one
another across departmental lines and an
overall morale boost, without structure
and a clear objective, the odds for clear,

lasting development of communication,
teamwork and problem-solving skills
are low.
Low budget, high yield. Cutting
corners doesn't have to mean cutting
effectiveness. In fact, high-priced
refreshments and venues, while luxurious
and fun, aren't going to seal the deal
when it comes to results. There are many
on-site options available - and the best
companies can bring the activity to your
door with phenomenal facilitators who
can tailor activities to the specific goals
your team has in mind. @
