at least that is
how the saying
for the members of MPI's Greater New
York Chapter this time there would be an
exception to that rule.
Picture it, Las Vegas 2013, I was
sitting in a darkened ballroom surrounded
by fellow MPI members awaiting the
wisdom of the keynote speaker hoping
that these words might inspire me for a
few moments but not expecting too much.
Let's face it, not all speakers are created
equal, and the ones that truly make you
think and change your world view are few
and far between.
However, it did not take long for the
words of Candy Chang to resonate with me,

and as the images of her projects flashed on
the jumbo screens before my eyes, an idea
popped into my head. Immediately, I turned
around and got President-Elect Carvie
Gillikin's attention and said, "I have an idea,
let's bring this to New York." I am not
even sure that I gave him a chance
to respond before the wheels started
turning in my head and this idea got
set into motion.
As with any worthwhile project,
there were a few boxes to tick and
people to get involved to help me make
this idea happen. First and foremost,
I sought Candy's approval, which she
willingly gave, to bring essentially

needed the support of the current

The key to the concept was to stay
true to the simplicity of its origin but
to adapt it slightly to serve the greater
good of our professional community.
One of MPIGNY's recent goals has been
to create a more engaged community
by removing roadblocks and increasing
pathways of communication. And one of
the biggest challenges has been that it is
often a one way conversation.
I saw evidence of the successful
projects at work, not only in the cities
that Candy has worked in but first hand
at WEC. Critical to the success of this
project for Greater New York though, was
to elicit the right feedback that would
resonate with our members and actually
foster the flow of ideas.
Rather than just posing one question,
we decided on three and created stickers
with different colors that simply said:
I am inspired by...

These stickers, which are inexpensive
to produce, potentially anonymous
and portable, would be available at
our monthly educational events while
the responses would be collected and
