@MPIGNY - Winter 2014 - (Page 30)

Continued from page 17 The possibilities for my programs were endless! The attendees, both fellow hosted buyers and suppliers, were fantastic. I met so many wonderful industry professionals during my time at IMEX, and I look forward to seeing and/or working with them in the near future. Heidi Okada: The best part of IMEX was knowing that I was walking into the trade show with more than 30 qualified appointments with real planners. The teamwork that occurs on the show floor in the booth is really great, too. I loved seeing other hotel partners pulling other destinations into their meetings once they found out about a specific need that we could fill. How would you improve on current hosted buyer programs? Joanna Puchalski: The walking! I was absolutely exhausted at the end of each day. I wanted to take in everything and made the most out of my days. There is so much to see/do, but not enough time to do it. At the same time, anything longer would have been overwhelming for not only the planners but the suppliers as well. Heidi Okada: Timing of the appointments. If a customer was previously engaged in the prior appointment and is a little bit tardy, it pushes the time back for the rest of the appointments. As it is every year, I had a challenge with the last day of appointments. Because so many planners were trying to leave early, they were "coming by" the booth the day before (or sometimes the first day) to squeeze in a quick badge scan so that they can leave a day early. In lieu of allowing the suppliers to offer independent receptions in the booth, I would like to see a planner reception that everyone can go to - perhaps it is hosted by a large chain (what a great sponsorship opportunity!). That way, we all have the opportunity to network outside of the exhibit hall in a somewhat off-the-cuff fashion. This also allows the regular planner attendee to be a part of an event. Also, perhaps the hall should open for one hour without any appointments, so that the regular attendees can walk around and create a traditional exhibit show. What hosted buyer programs have you attended? Joanna Puchalski: This was my first one! Heidi Okada: IMEX, AIBTM and MPI. Some have called hosted-buyer programs the future of trade shows; do you agree with that and why? Joanna Puchalski: I absolutely agree! I think most planners will agree that our time is very limited. At a hosted-buyer program, we have the opportunity to see and learn about many destinations/venues/hotels within the span of a few days. Scheduling appointments ahead of time with suppliers that we have an interest in allows them to customize our appointment to our needs, giving each of us the most out of our appointment, as well as leaving us a little time to explore the show floor. It's a win-win for both planners and suppliers. Heidi Okada: Yes, I would agree with that statement. The program allows for qualified planners to make appointments with the suppliers who want to work with them. As we embark on the future, and create additional experiences both positive and with opportunity for growth, I am confident that this model will keep gaining followers. The old saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" does not seem to apply here, where every year, every hostedbuyer format seems to try something new.
