SU ZANNE MEDCALF REGIONAL MANAGER, HOSTED BUYER PROGRAM, IMEX AMERICA Suzanne.medcalf@imexexhibitions.com www.imexamerica.com MPIGNY: Tell me a little about yourself, your meeting planning career, and your current position (it doesn’t have to be long, just enough for the readers to get an idea of who you are and what a typical day might be like for you). SM: I joined IMEX America 2 years ago as an Account Manager, Hosted Buyer Programs – I am the only US based, full time employee of the company. When I started at IMEX America I was brand new to the industry as a whole, I was excited and nervous for the challenge. My background is in public relations and marketing, so the meetings industry and the world of acronyms for everything was completely foreign to me. My typical day begins with PG Tips, or builders tea – I was introduced to it in our Brighton office and now have it brought over each time a colleague comes to see me. We do have a small office in Midtown, so I spend my mornings emailing and Skyping with my UK team. Since I only have them until 12:00pm eastern time, I use the time to catch up on any updates for the hosted buyer program, or to chat about upcoming events. I also get the football (soccer) scores so I am up to date on how the Brighton and Hove Albion Seagulls are playing. My afternoons are spent preparing for upcoming trips to MPI Chapters around the US – as part of our strategic partnership I am able to attend chapter meetings to speak on behalf of MPI and IMEX regarding WEC and IMEX America. This has allowed me to see how different chapters operate and bring back some of their ideas and programs to the Greater New York chapter. MPIGNY: What prompted you to join MPIGNY? How long have you been a member? Describe your volunteer activities with MPIGNY. States – including the MPI International headquarters in Dallas! SM: I was asked to join MPIGNY because IMEX and MPI are strategic partners, it was a great opportunity for me to get more involved in the industry and meet exhibitors and buyers from IMEX America. I have been a member for 2 years and became a volunteer on the recognition committee last year. I am proud to have taken on the role of co-chair for the Genie Awards committee for 2013. MPIGNY: What else would you like to share with the readers (i.e., something you are proud of, a little personal note about yourself, hobbies or interests, future projects)? SM: In my spare time I am captain of a ZogSports co-ed, two-hand touch football team – most of us have played together for almost 5 years and it is amazing to see how far we have come – we just won our division for winter football and are excited to begin a successful spring season. I am also passionate about animal rescue and have been a volunteer for Last Chance Animal Rescue, a Long Island based rescue that brings dogs from highkill shelters in the south to Southampton, NY to find their forever homes. I also have a wonderful 4-year old Chesapeake Bay Retriever called Montauk who loves to visit the beach almost as much as I do. MPIGNY: What is the best part about belonging to MPIGNY? SM: The members! Once I became an active member on the recognition committee I felt like I gained a new group of friends. As someone who was so new to the industry the experience could have been overwhelming, but I have had a team of people there to support me from the beginning. I have met lifelong friends through my involvement with MPIGNY. MPIGNY: What is the best part of working in the meeting planning industry? What is the greatest source of job satisfaction for you? SM: The people! We are a dynamic, enthusiastic bunch – I have loved to get to know people who have been in the industry for years, or future leaders who are just starting out. Learning about how the industry comes together, how each group fits, is inspiring. I also have to admit that the travel opportunities are also incredible, since joining IMEX America I have been able to spend months in Brighton, England at our office, as well as visiting Germany, Slovenia, France, Spain, Ireland, Puerto Rico, Brazil, and numerous US MPIGNY: What are your future plans? SM: I am excited to be part of the 20132014 MPIGNY Board of Directors, as the Director of Leadership Development. I look forward to helping shape our chapter – there is so much that we can do as a team and I am proud to be part of the journey. I am looking forward to the Genie Awards on June 19, it is sure to be the event of the year! I am also excited for IMEX America 2013 as we look forward to our third year in Las Vegas – after a sold-out show in 2012, we have moved to a new hall in the Sands Expo with even more exhibitors, buyers and attendees!
