#events MPIGNY @ WEC BY TOM ANDRIKA DIRECTOR OF LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT I t has been said that “What Happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas,” but in the case of this year’s World Education Congress held at the end of July, I would be remiss if I followed this theme. In fact, it is the theme of this year’s WEC that really hit home for me and echoed a choice that MPIGNY has engaged in over the last two years. The theme I speak of is “Transformation,” and it was my honor as the Terry Spinelli Scholarship recipient to see firsthand not only how our chapter has successfully embodied transformation, but also to see how the smallest choices by individuals who choose to be actively engaged have created exponential impacts not only within MPI, but around the globe. Just as it would be impossible to convey how thankful I was for MPIGNY to provide the opportunity for me to attend this year’s WEC, it too would be impossible to fit all the great experiences I had into this short article. From motivational speakers, engaging educational classes, crosschapter interactivity and networking to entertaining events and team-building community service projects, I will attempt to share the experiences that left a lasting impact and convey the immense amount of pride I have in our chapter and my fellow MPIGNY members. Imagine walking into a large reception area one morning with that first cup of coffee not even hitting your system yet. You say hello to other chapter members you’ve seen before at events back home and meet and greet some chapter members you have never met before, two of which literally just joined the chapter a few days earlier. Slowly, the group begins to grow from just you and a few others to almost 60 members of MPIGNY following a brightly lit, impactful and wonderfully unique sign into the Opening General Session. The cheerful greetings, creative planning for the sign and ability to gather as one strong group was just the beginning of the transformation of leadership, teamwork and basic spirit MPIGNY conveyed all week long at WEC. We soon discovered that we were in store for many more stories of transformation, stories that were new and different, starting with our keynote speaker Candy Chang. Candy, a TED senior fellow, took us on an inspirational journey where urban planning and art combined. Through projects such as “Before I Die” and “I Wish This Was,” Candy took medium as simple as chalkboard paint and a pen and nametag-like stickers and transformed entire neighborhoods not only in their ability to communicate but to stay engaged and come together to cause a noticeable and positive change. To see the stories I heard, please check out www.candychang.com. You will be amazed! By the conclusion of the opening session, the tone for the week had been set. We had all come together as individuals of a chapter and now we were headed out as one team on a mission to show that MPIGNY was serious about transformation. The days at WEC seemed to fly by as the week moved rapidly towards a close. I interacted with a famous broadcaster who showed me how to connect, convey and convince to influence an audience. I met enthusiastic students from Canada who were going to school for meetings and events and had won scholarships to attend WEC. Dave Mitchell taught me the importance of creating teams comprised of diverse strengths in order to maximize success. The list could go on, but I want to conclude my experience at WEC with how I was part of a team that in just an hour created hope, magic, support, strength and transformation. In fact, there were more than 300 teams that came together for an organization called Helping Hands, Continued on page 18 info@mpigny.org 17 http://www.candychang.com
