#feature ACROSS THE POND – An MPI UK and Ireland Chapter Member Visits MPIGNY BY JOSHUA NOVICK AND SUZANNE MEDCALF M PIGNY is excited to welcome Andrew Swanston to our chapter! Andrew is ExCeL London’s senior business development manager. He is based in London and is an active member of the UK and Ireland Chapter of MPI. Andrew is responsible for ExCeL’s North American business and has transferred temporarily to New York in order to further develop relationships with clients, as well as establish new contacts. What better way than to get involved with MPIGNY! Andrew is looking forward to using his MPIGNY membership as a tool to stay connected with the meeting planner community and to remain at the forefront of the meetings industry, from education to current events. He has already experienced the chapter’s camaraderie while attending MPI WEC in Las Vegas as our newest international member. He said, “It was great to meet my new MPIGNY family this year at the World Education Conference. All of the chapter members – suppliers and planners – were very welcoming and excited to hear my ideas and comments. I am looking forward to attending the upcoming education and networking sessions and to sharing some of the great ideas with my colleagues back at the UK and Ireland Chapter in the future.” Elaborating on this new opportunity, Andrew said, “I’m really looking forward to this exciting opportunity. I am proud to be flying the London flag and promoting all that ExCeL and our capital city has to offer as a leading events destination. ” So let’s welcome Andrew to NYC, MPIGNY-style, with some great ideas to take full advantage of all our city has to offer ... you may want to try these as well: • Visit the ACE Hotel, not only a fun place for your friends to stay when they come to town, but you will find some of New York’s best food and dining venues – such as The Breslin and Stumptown Coffee Roasters. • New York State has some of the best farms in the country, try local corn from Long Island or pumpkins from Dutchess County at the Union Square Farmers Market. • Visit the Met Bar at the DoubleTree by Hilton Metropolitan. It’s a hip cocktail venue right in the heart of Manhattan. • Take a culture break and stop by one of the myriad of museums in New York, from classics at The Met and modern masterpieces at the MoMa, to the latest contemporary pieces at the New Museum. Plus, no visit to NY is complete without seeing the blue whale at the Museum of Natural History. • Stroll The High Line from Chelsea to the Meatpacking district. Stop by The Standard hotel for a local brew in the beer garden when your feet have had enough! • Try a cronut, the pastry hybrid that has the entire city talking, from Dominique Ansel Bakery. • Rent a CitiBike and explore Central Park. Once it’s cold you can ice skate at Wollman Rink, then warm up at the Mandarin Oriental while taking in the views of Columbus Circle. • Join MPIGNY at our Oktoberfest Networking Event, October 23 – see what our members are up to and brainstorm new best practices What are your ideas for Andrew’s time in NYC?
