@MPIGNY - Fall 2015 - (Page 24)

#events 2015 MPIGNY BY FRANK STAPLETON T he most difficult part about planning a golf outing is picking a date one year from now and hoping that it will be a bright, sunny day. For the last 24 years, we have only had rain disrupt our golf outing once, but this year may have been the best day yet: sunshine, 80 degrees and low humidity ... the perfect day for golfing. The day kicked off with registration and breakfast. Attendees networked and then some went off to compete in the putting and chipping contests. Then at 10:45 a.m., 100 golfers headed off to their respective hole assignments, and the outing was underway. This is not your typical golf outing. Every hole is sponsored, and there are some creative ways as the golfers tool around the course. This year, Ritz-Carlton offered vodka and orange juice, and they squeezed the oranges right at the hole - very refreshing. Loews Hotels had an ice cream truck that offered a variety of flavors, including red wine. The New York Palace gave away a sleeve of gold golf balls. Hard Rock had margaritas. Okay, I'm making this sound like a cocktail party on wheels ... and, to some degree, that's not a bad description. The day is as much about the networking as it is the golf, and one of the main networking sites on the golf course is the Hilton Halfway House. Dean Altvater has been a part of the golf outing right from the beginning, and he has never let go of his sponsorship of the Halfway House. His creative themes and drinks make this oasis the perfect place for planners and suppliers to stop, grab a bite to eat and foster new relationships. Probably, the most fun sponsorship on the golf course was Marriott's EMS Cart. Esther Wells and Erin Musni, who were decked out in nurses outfits, traversed the golf course and offered band-aids, sunscreen, breath mints, delightful water spritzers and a concoction that was guaranteed to refresh and revitalize those who dared partake. NYC & Company's Aroma Therapy Cart provided cold towels to cool golfers off as the sun grew stronger. Mandarin Hotels distributed much needed golf balls. Kalahari & The Ride sponsored refreshment carts that distributed water, beer, soda and snacks. 24 @MPIGNY FALL 2015 HARD ROCK GOL Around 5 p.m., the golfers finished up and made their way back the clubhouse, where they took part in the pre-dinner reception. Afterward, we went into the main room for dinner and the Awards Ceremony. There was a lot of buzz over the winning score, which was an incredible 21 under par shot by the team of Chris Moss (JetBlue), Doug Caldwell (J.P. Morgan), Jeff Barker (Jeff Barker Productions) and Denise Hunter (Destinations Link Hospitality). MPIGNY's President Robert Sanders had three foursomes and repeated as the winners of the Penfold Cup. We took time out to thank all of our sponsors, especially Hard Rock Cafe for stepping up to become the event's Marquis Sponsor. One of the highlights every year is the 50-50 prize drawing. This year, we had some excellent prizes: tickets for the Billy Joel concert at Madison Square Garden in a private suite and an overnight stay compliments of the Sheraton New York Times Square, a GoPro camera courtesy of Vail Resorts, three nights at the Melia Tropicale All-Inclusive Resort in The Dominican Republic, and and roundtrip tickets on JetBlue, just to mention a few. We also added one auction item - a private tour of the White House, arranged by Bermuda Limousine, with roundtrip tickets on Amtrak, an overnight stay at the Capitol Hilton, dinner at the 1789 restaurant and a limousine to chauffeur you from the time you arrive until you leave. It was one of those priceless opportunities, and we had some very active bidding. In the end, Robert Sanders had the high bid of $1,500. A surprise guest at the outing was Kevin Kirby, MPI's chairman for 20142015, who commented that he's attended a lot of events around the globe and - I'm paraphrasing - this outing was one of the best. Quite a compliment! There were many more positive remarks as everyone filed out to head home. It's always nice, given all the hard work the committee puts in year after year, to have that work validated by the attendees. @
