[ MPI SPOTLIGHT ] Get to Know ... BRANDI GARRIGUS PRESENTER AND MEETING COORDINATOR AMERICAN ACADEMY OF OPHTHALMOLOGY BGARRIGUS@AAO.ORG How many meetings and events do you plan each year? I planned eight medical meetings this year that ranged from 300 to 3,500 attendees and contributed to the success of our Annual Meeting, for which I organized 45+ symposia sessions and 24 special meetings and events. At AAO, it truly is a concerted effort. Our successes couldn't happen without the combined talents of our awesome meetings team. What is one of your biggest planning success stories? I'm often asked to plan events for friends. Most recently, I was asked to plan a retirement party for 500 people. The catch was that it was taking place in one week and had a limited budget. I was up for the challenge. The event took place on a warm, wine country evening. I used rustic old doors as tables, long benches dressed with vibrant pillows, burlap runners and wildflowers. Local cuisine and seasonal items helped stretched our budget. I was blessed to find a local bluegrass band to perform gratis! The icing on the cake was when the retiree came up to me and said, "I may have only known you a week, but you captured my personality so well tonight! I couldn't have imagined my party any other way!" Yeah, there was a tear after that. Where is the most unique venue you've ever planned a meeting? Retiro Park (Parque de El Retiro) in Madrid, Spain. Looking at the future of meeting planning, what do you feel is one of the biggest trends on the horizon? SANDY ROISSIER SENIOR SALES & EVENTS MANAGER BERKELEY CITY CLUB SROISSIER@BERKELEYCITYCLUB.COM Tell us about your role at the Berkeley City Club. My position at the Berkeley City Club is Senior Sales & Events Manager, and I am responsible for booking groups and events at our venue. What new trend in the industry are you most excited about? The trend that I am most interested in is the mobile apps that are coming out that make it easier for keeping track of events. What's the biggest challenge you've ever faced on the job? The biggest challenge that I have ever faced on the job is trying to please all the attendees with their differing needs, some of which were beyond my control. What makes your venue a unique spot for meetings? The Berkeley City Club is a unique spot for meetings because of the architecture. Within our building, you can get the feel of holding your meeting in multiple locations without ever leaving the building. Every event room within our building is different from the next. How long have you been a member of MPINCC? I have been a member of MPINCC since July 2014, so I am a new member. The biggest trends are increased interactivity during sessions, audience engagement and attendee-centered learning environments. Get rid of those cookie-cutter floor plans; interactive learning formats are what will keep your attendees returning year after year. Adiós PowerPoint, hello Prezi, emaze, and Haiku Deck! What made you join MPI? How long have you been a member of MPINCC? I am still fairly new, but I have gone to one of the professional education programs and found the workshop to be very informative. Two fun and interesting years. I joined MPI at the suggestion of my general manager and was told that it would be a great group to network with and learn from. Which MPINCC chapter activities do you find most educational or enjoyable? What is your favorite thing to do outside of work? Traveling. I am happiest when I am on the road. When I am home, I enjoy reading and teaching English as a second language.  ● 14 | P E R S P E C T I V E | What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?
