[ EMERGING PROFESSIONALS ] Emerging Professionals Committee: Engaging Future Leaders! BY THOM WARD MPINCC PAST PRESIDENT, EMERGING PROFESSIONALS COMMITTEE CHAIR AND HALL OF FAME s Students currently enrolled or recently graduated from a hospitality program from one of the local colleges are the lifeline to our industry. This year, the Emerging Professionals Committee members challenged themselves to develop a program that would attract students to participate and introduce them to the value of becoming members of MPINCC. We needed a purpose and thus emerged our new mission statement: The Mission of the Emerging Professionals Committee is to educate, engage and enlighten students, new graduates and professionals transitioning into the industry by providing them with the tools and resources to succeed while we welcome them to MPINCC. We successfully designed "The Power of Networking" presentation to help students develop their networking skills. The content was delivered to students at San Francisco State University in small discussion-focused groups by committee members Bree Brooks, Christa Mekki and Past President Matthew Schermerhorn, CMP. Guided by committee Chair and MPINCC Past President Thom Ward, the committee offered a longer version of that presentation and was joined by Darci Motta, CMP, CITE, who delivered a segment on LinkedIn, at this year's Annual Conference & Expo in February, which was attended by nearly 150 students. It was one of the chapter's largest successes to date in working with our local students, and we received some of the highest attendee survey scores of the conference. Another highlight from this past year was committee member Matthew Schemerhorn, CMP's engagement of Google to create an evening for students at its Mountain View Campus. Members of the Google Marketing Events Team presented a panel discussion, facilitated by EPC team member Bree Brooks, to about 75 students. Afterward, Google sponsored a reception for the students who were shuttled to and from Google by Mosaic Global Transportation. The event was 100 percent sponsored, and it marked the first time MPINCC has had an event for students only at a company headquarters. Following the successful Google event, EP Committee Co-Chair Christa Mekki and Bree Brooks exhibited at the Northern California Career Fair at SFSU's hospitality department. Our efforts this year also helped the chapter strengthen our community relationships with Bay Area colleges including San Francisco State University, San Jose State University, and University of San Francisco and Cal State University East Bay; as well as establish a partnership with The J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation Hospitality and Tourism Management Global Student Career and Professional Development Program at SFSU. One of our goals this year was to create more sponsorships for the students to be able to experience MPINCC's Annual Conference & Expo. With the support of President Jody Brandes, CMP, and President-Elect Joey Nevin, along with the generous donations of the chapter and several key leaders, 80 students were able to attend this year's conference. Please look for opportunities to sponsor a student to attend one of our monthly events or next year's ACE! It is the hope of this year's EPC team that the momentum we have started will continue to flourish as we strive to grow our chapter and industry with great new leadership. ● P E R S P E C T I V E | summer 2015 | 15
