[ PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE ] MPINCC ... Your Practice Field BY JOEY NEVIN DIRECTOR, SALES & MARKETING GIANTS ENTERPRISES A As I step into the president role for the MPI Northern California Chapter, I am both honored and humbled to accept the responsibility that lies ahead. While I am certainly looking forward to the coming year, I cannot help but look back at the many fellow members who helped shape the person and member I am today. The wisdom, guidance and leadership that was shown to me through the years is only something I can hope to impart on my fellow members and colleagues as time goes by. When I thought about a theme for the upcoming year, I wanted to create something meaningful yet simple. I wanted to find a way to tell the MPI story in a way that was clear to me and hopefully tangible to our membership. I leaned on my past, as well as my current role with Giants Enterprises, in order to conceptualize the idea of looking at MPINCC as our "Practice Field." On a practice field: * You choose to be there ... it is your time. * You work constantly on your craft to improve both your strengths and weaknesses. * You learn a lot about yourself - how you interact with others, what you are passionate about and how you accept/ reject criticism. I view MPI a lot like this, as we are all here to improve professionally. MPINCC will allow you to practice and hone your professional skills - some of which you may not have the ability to work on during your day-to-day tasks and responsibilities. For example, on your MPINCC Practice Field ... * I f you are interested in marketing and your current position does not allow for any of these responsibilities to be pursued, then join the Marketing Committee. * I f you would like to be more comfortable in your personal communication skills, then improve them at our "Nothing But Networking" events or join the Leadership Development Team. * I f you think your event planning skills are top notch, the truth is that we can always get better, so join the Holiday Party or Gala committees in order to further develop your strengths. I am hopeful that this message/theme resonates and that we can all look at the coming year through this lens. Lastly, I wanted to be sure that everyone is aware of the upcoming the MPI World Education Congress (WEC), which will be hosted in San Francisco on August 1-4. This will be a fantastic opportunity for all of us to connect with current and new industry associates, learn from some great speakers at educational sessions and enjoy everything that San Francisco has to offer as we showcase our great city and region to our domestic and international counterparts. Thank you for the time, and I look forward to serving as your chapter president during the upcoming 2015-2016 term. ● P E R S P E C T I V E | summer 2015 | 5
