What's New in

Awards season may be over, but there is so much to
celebrate in Los Angeles with a number of new hotel
openings downtown.
Proper Hospitality, the new brand headed by former
Viceroy Hotels chief Brad Korzen, is slated to debut their first
Los Angeles hotel with a downtown property located at the
site of the former Case Hotel. The 13-story property, which
was built in 1924, will have 148 rooms and has plans to open

Looking for somewhere out of the ordinary for your next event
in San Diego? New special venues across the city may be just
the answer.
In November 2017, a unique outdoor venue, The Glampisphere
opened in the hip neighborhood of North Park. The modern venue
offers an open-air flexible space covered in sail shades appropriate
for hosting events from business meetings to birthdays. The
Glampisphere provides a relaxed, alfresco San Diego vibe, but

in fall 2018.
The 1924 Commercial Exchange Building in downtown's
Historic Core has been transformed into the Freehand Los
Angeles, which opened in June 2017. The 13-story building
boasts 226 rooms, ranging from traditional accommodations
to high-design hostels (or "poshtels") with up to eight beds.
The hotel also features a lobby living room, retail, restaurant
and bar offerings in addition to a rooftop pool and lounge.
Hotel Figueroa is in its soft stages of opening after a
renovation that will transform its Moroccan décor to a new
contemporary aesthetic with a touch of Spanish flare. Hotel
Figueroa will offer expanded bathrooms, 57 new suites, a
second restaurant, a fourth bar and a garden on the roof.
InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown is part of the
tallest U.S. building west of Chicago as the Wilshire Grand
Center and opened in July 2017. The hotel features 889
rooms, 110 suites and one presidential suite, including a
"sky lobby" on the 70th floor. There is nearly 100,000 square
feet of meetings, conventions and event space. Wilshire
Grand Center, a $1.1 billion project, includes 400,000 square
feet of offices and 45,000 square feet of retail space.
Finally, the Los Angeles outpost of New York's NoMad
Hotel opened downtown in January 2018. The NoMad is
redeveloped out of downtown's Giannini Place, which was
built in 1923 as the headquarters for Bank of Italy (which
became Bank of America). The 12-story hotel has about
250 rooms as well as a rooftop pool.

features the technology needed for a professional meeting.
Earlier this year, Children's Nature Retreat added a spa and
meeting space to host private events and corporate retreats at
this 20-acre family attraction located in San Diego's east county
city of Alpine. The Children's Nature Retreat is home to 120
domesticated livestock and exotic animals and serves as an
education center for groups and individuals wanting to get close
to nature. The retreat can now accommodate 125 people for
an outdoor picnic-style private event on site or 40 people at its
750-square-foot wellness center.
Punch Bowl Social will open a 24,000-square-foot restaurant,
bar and entertainment venue in San Diego's Makers Quarter
development in spring 2018. Punch Bowl Social is a concept that
combines social gaming with a focus on innovative dining and craft
beverage offerings, including shareable punch bowls. Located in
the historic Coliseum Federal Athletic Club in downtown's East
Village neighborhood, Punch Bowl Social San Diego will feature
eight bowling lanes, private karaoke rooms, a 360-degree bar with
televisions for sports enthusiasts, and numerous other lounges and
gathering spots for groups both large and small. Additionally, the
venue will offer virtual reality games for groups or individuals and
dedicated servers and tech support team members.
Finally, projected to open in early 2019, construction on The
Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center is underway in San
Diego's north coastal region of La Jolla. The Conrad will feature
a 500-seat concert hall with orchestra pit, 1,600-square-foot
flexible-use space, reception room, large central courtyard,
comfortable back-of-house facilities, and state-of-the-art audio
and visual equipment. ●
