Meeting MPI Toronto - March/April 2016 - (Page 20)
What do you get when you ask for best tips from some of the
industry's best? You get a veritable pot of gold! Hereunder, some
truly outstanding and thoughtful advice that we can all benefit from
(not just you lucky newcomers!):
President, The Really Fabulous Event Co.
Follow your passion! Be intentional and purposefully choose a route
within the industry that allows you to do what you feel most passionate
about. There are countless options in today's vast world of meetings
and events - literally something for everyone. If you do what makes
your spirit soar and make it your own, you will do it well, with integrity,
and the legacy you leave behind will be one of your own design.
SANDRA MONIZ, CMP
Business Development Manager, Eastern Canada, Calgary Meetings + Conventions
Try to connect with 10 new people during an hour event and make sure to
engage in meaningful conversation. Note something unique about each person
and record it on the back of their card so that you have something to reference
when you follow up. Our industry thrives on trust and human connections. If you
take the time to build trust through follow up and establishing rapport, you will be
successful in your journey and probably become a master networker.
DUFF SHAW, CMP, CITE
Instructor Emeritus, Ryerson University
For a new person, the most important thing to do is build relationships. To
planners: we don't do business with the bricks and mortar of hotels, we do
business with people. To suppliers: we don't do business with corporations or
associations, we do business with people. Build a network. Build relationships
within that network. From that, earn your credibility within the industry. "A wise
person may not know the answer but knows who to ask."
