A

CREATING
LARGER BUSINESS
OPPORTUNITIES

s the President of Tap Resources, I have been
focused on creating more and larger business
opportunities over the last couple of years. To do
this, I had to prepare myself, stretch my creativity
and build my risk muscles. The more I dreamed of a bigger
vision, the more it became achievable in my mind. At first,
my thoughts seemed like delusions of grandeur, but over
time, I realized I could achieve great things, to the benefit of
myself and others.
I started to understand, as a woman business owner
and president of CanSPEP, that taking calculated risks was
going to be essential if I wanted to grow. Each of us can
define in what form that growth is; however, you cannot
achieve any growth if you do not risk doing something
different or create conflict. Pushing against boundaries
creates conflict, and without conflict, there can be no
growth. And now, I will use a four-letter word that starts
with F! Yes, sometimes you may fail. You will fail to achieve
your desired outcome - that time around - but you will
have just given that risk muscle a workout and learned
something about yourself.
As an entrepreneur, I am told, I am already a greater
risk taker than the general population. Truly, I don't know
about that, there are people who will hang off the side of
the CN Tower or put their money in a slot machine with no
guarantee of winning. They take the risk for the potential
of exhilaration, maybe for the challenge. Personally, I take
"calculated" risks for some of the same reasons - potential,
exhilaration and challenge, but also for the creative
endeavour - the sheer thrill of exploring and trying. Over
time, my risk tolerance has increased and what would have
seemed to be a big step to me 10 years ago, now doesn't
even register as all that risky. Still, don't expect to see me
hanging off the side of the CN Tower any time soon (or ever)!
As my assessment of risks has matured, I now look at
risk more from a point of wonder and curiosity. So, what
I have learned about creating larger opportunities? You
have to take calculated risks based on empirical creativity,
which combines the art of creativity with the evidence of
hard facts and data. Risk becomes a puzzle to work on or

a maze to explore, rather than the monster that lives under
your bed.
I have worked on some amazing programs because I
tempered my fear of risk with objective thinking. I didn't
let that little voice in my head berate me into believing
that someone else was more capable, more creative, had
more connections, were better equipped, had more staff,
or better processes. I could go on and on coming up with
reasons why I shouldn't take that risk or why I wasn't
prepared to take on bigger opportunities. To a large extent,
the key is being mentally prepared.
What does being prepared look like? I do operate a
successful small business, but my desire to work on larger
projects was greater than my fear. Once I had tackled
the fear, the challenge was to create the environment
that I needed to take on bigger opportunities within my
sphere of acceptable risks. I worked on building strategic
alliances and partnerships. I had some learnings over time,
as not all of the partnerships worked out the way I had
hoped. However, I took those initial baby steps that helped
me learn how to create stronger strategic alliances and
partnerships. Those larger opportunities can often mean
greater risks but those risks can be shared or managed
with reciprocal relationships. I had to expand my network,
and in doing so, I created even greater access to markets.
Best of all, it has been fun, exhilarating and rewarding in
so many more ways than just increasing my net profits -
although the increase in net profits is still very cool!
So let me leave you with this quote: "Creative risktaking is essential to success in any goal where the stakes
are high. Thoughtless risks are destructive, of course,
but perhaps even more wasteful is thoughtless caution
which prompts inaction and promotes failure to seize
opportunity." - Gary Ryan Blair
Wishing you all the best in your next big risk-taking
adventure! ●
