Time to Pass the Baton

Wow! Where did the year go? No, not 2017, but the MPI Toronto fiscal year? It feels like it was just
the other day that I wrote my first President's Message for meeting magazine, and here I am one
year later putting together my last one. Time really went by quickly.
2016-2017 was a terrific year and the Leadership Team has done so much for our chapter with
new programs and events based on feedback received from you: our members.
The new memberTOmember initiative has tracked over $2.3 million (at the time of writing) in
direct member-to-member business transactions, providing crucial return on investment data for
our chapter, and has shown how powerful our community's economic impact is for our members.
We have maximized available chapter grants and scholarships to provide you with high quality
education and networking events all while finding a way to give back to our community through
our ECOS initiatives and fundraising for the MPI Foundation Canada. By the way, the MPI
Toronto Chapter was recently acknowledged for raising the most funds globally for the
MPI Foundation.
We recently announced a new partnership with the Ottawa and Montreal-Quebec City chapters
to co-host "the EVENT," a regional education conference to be held in Ottawa in 2018. A first of its
kind in Canada for MPI.
The Event Ecosystem is the main theme of this issue of meeting. Ecosystem, by definition, is
a community of interacting organisms and their physical environment or a complex network or
interconnected system. Sounds familiar? It sure does because it very well represents our meeting
and events industry. A community of interacting organisms: planners, suppliers, stakeholders,
venues, transportation, food and beverage and content all working together (interacting) in their
physical environment - or, in our case, our events.
For an ecosystem to be in harmony, all of these interacting organisms must work together
toward a common goal as highlighted by many of the articles in this issue. From creative thinking
and idealization through collaboration and inspiring encounters, to embracing our industry's
evolution and how we do things differently than we did just a few years ago.
Much like the components that make up an ecosystem, our chapter is fueled by different
components that, when put together, make up an ever-evolving ecosystem of its own,
and a huge part of our chapter's ecosystem success comes from our dedicated volunteers
and sponsors.
I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the tremendous support I received
from the Executive Team, the Board of Directors, the Leadership Team and Fletcher Wright
Associates during this past year. Without their support, passion and dedication, we would not have
accomplished so many great things for our members. I have learned so much from collaborating
with them on an individual and team basis. I am eternally thankful to each one of you.
A big thank you also goes to the many sponsors we are blessed to have. Our successes are your
successes. Without you, we would not have a well-balanced chapter ecosystem.
It has been a great, albeit really fast, year but it is now time to pass the baton and welcome Sandra
Moniz, CMP, as the new President for 2017-2018. Sandra and I have served together on the MPI
Toronto Chapter Board of Directors for many years, and she is more than ready to take on this new
challenge. I look forward to continuing to serve as Immediate Past President by her side.
I hope to see you at one of our next chapter's events and would like to close by wishing everyone
a great and safe summer! ●
