Motor Coach Canada: Tour & Travel Canada 2017 - 85

Alberta

Regions
Alberta is divided into the following six areas:
* Alberta Central: Spotted with parks and
prairies, the central area of Alberta is
home to several towns and natural areas.
Visitors can explore the Kootenay Plains
Ecological Reserve, a natural grasslands
site uncommon to other Rocky Mountain
passes. Lac La Biche Mission National
and Provincial Historic Site is the oldest
standing sawn lumber building in Alberta.
The Fort Normandeau Historic Site and
Interpretive Centre in Red Deer is a reconstruction of the North-West Mounted Police
Fort built during the Riel Rebellion. With
golf resorts, canyons, lakes and trails, plus
the many other historic sites, festivals and
museums, there is plenty to experience.
* Alberta North: Although Alberta's North is
considered one of Canada's most developed northern regions, that doesn't mean
that it has lost its rugged appeal. Northern
Alberta's grandiose lakes, mighty rivers,
abundant wildlife and untapped wilderness are the backdrop for an outdoor
experience of a lifetime by horseback,

canoe/kayak, jet-boat, ATV, or simply by
foot. Alberta's long summer days are not
only great for adventurers, golfers can
always fit in an extra round on one of
Northern Alberta's boreal forest courses.

(800) 756-4351 for more information and
a free guide featuring holiday packages.
* Alberta South: Alberta South is home
of the badlands-Canada's historic footprint of times and creatures past. Tourists
can visit the United Nations-designated
World Heritage Sites of Dinosaur Provincial
Park, where one of the most extensive
collections of fossil beds in the world can
be found, and the breathtaking Waterton
Lakes National Park. Head-Smashed-In
Buffalo Jump's Interpretive Centre celebrates aboriginal hunting techniques used
for 6,000 years. Just as a couple of examples among many, Lethbridge and Medicine
Hat offer art galleries, museums, gardens
and parks.
* Canadian Rockies: Positioned at the province's western edge, the Canadian Rockies
are a patchwork of mountains, lakes, towns
and peaceful wilderness. It is here that
some of the province's most beautiful
spaces-Banff and Jasper national parks-
are found. The area also features trails,
skiing, golfing, fishing, hiking, museums,
historic sites, guided tours and festivals.
Nature lovers will appreciate sites like Bow
Falls in Banff National Park, the majestic
beauty of Lake Louise, or the awe-inspiring
Maligne Canyon of Jasper National Park.

* Calgary and Area: This urban centre
boasts a 460-kilometer pathway system.
It also features one of the top-ranked zoos
in the world: the Calgary Zoo, Botanical
Garden and Prehistoric Park, known for its
work in protecting endangered species.
Host of the 1988 Winter Olympic Games,
the city's Canada Olympic Park is a yearround sport and tourist attraction, offering
a host of activities. For those who enjoy
nature, the surrounding area features
ranch land, valleys, parks, historic sites
and trails.
* Edmonton: The province's capital,
Edmonton, is known as Canada's Festival
City-but festivals are only the beginning. Tourists will enjoy the Muttart
Conservatory-a sight unto itself-composed of four glass pyramids. Inside are
botanical treasures and distinctive climates ranging from desert heat to the
cool of a misty forest. After taking a stroll
through some of the city's many parks,
visitors might want to do some shopping
at West Edmonton Mall, spanning some
48  blocks and featuring a skating rink,
water park, amusement area and more.

Festivals and Events
The following are a few of the festivals and
events that take place in Alberta and the
months during which they generally take place.

ALBERTA

Bordered by the Rocky Mountains to the
west and Montana to the south, Alberta offers
a multitude of experiences for the youthfully
spirited traveler. Familiar in any language,
the Rocky Mountains are unquestionably
Alberta's most well-known natural attraction,
but there are other landscapes and terrains
around the province that have earned equal
stature. In fact, the United Nations has designated five of Alberta's natural wonders as
World Heritage Sites. Find out for yourself
how magnificent they are!
Stretching from east of Red Deer in central
Alberta to the Montana border in the south,
the Canadian Badlands is a living history
book going back millennia. It is said the early
French settlers named this lunar-like landscape "Mauvais Terre" (Bad Land) because of
its inhospitable terrain. But this unique region
of wind-scraped rock formations, cactus-covered canyons and coulees has revealed an
abundance of riches below its surface. One of
the area's ancient fossil beds has yielded up
the largest dinosaur find in the world.
For the city dwellers, Alberta is happy to
accommodate those who love to shop till
they drop. For starters, try North America's
largest mall-48 city blocks-in the heart of
Edmonton. Beyond the mall scene you'll find
plenty of specialty stores, art galleries, bookstores, boutiques, antiques and collectibles,
gourmet food and wine and more.
