Newfoundland &
Labrador

Regions
Newfoundland & Labrador is divided into five
touring regions:
* Avalon Region: This region is home to
Newfoundland & Labrador's capital city, St.
John's, which has been inhabited since the
1620s. The city is a great place for those who
enjoy fine dining, hotels and night life. For a
bit of history, visitors can see the Castle Hill
National Historic Site at Placentia, the remains
of an old French fort marking the French
capital of Plaisance from the 17th and 18th
centuries. At Heart's Content, the old Cable
Station is now a Provincial Historic Site. It was
once a main relay for transatlantic telegraph
messages, and still houses much of the old
equipment. The first successful transatlantic
cable was landed here in 1866. The National
Historic Site of Hawthorne Cottage was once
home to Captain Bob Bartlett, the ice pilot
who guided Peary to within striking distance

of the North Pole. Whale and seabird tours
in the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve will
astound visitors with visions of humpback
whales and seabirds, all amidst a backdrop
of 10,000-year-old icebergs.
* Central Region: The central region is one of
the best places in the province to see whales
and icebergs. This northeast coast area was
settled mainly by people from southwestern
England, and the area still retains speech
patterns familiar in Shakespeare's day. The
coast is dotted with outports - small fishing
towns - and the interior is mainly forests and
lakes. You'll also find Canada's easternmost
national park, Terra Nova National Park of
Canada, in this region. The first mine in the
area was a soapstone quarry dug by the
Dorset people 1,500 years ago. The region's
southern coast has more French flavour
in the place names, undiscovered fjords,
aboriginal culture and tiny remote communities that don't have cars.
* Eastern Region: This area's Provincial
Seamen's Museum in Grand Bank interprets
the region's age-old relationship with the
sea. Visitors can explore villages established
during the expansion of the British migratory
fishery in the 16th century. The St. Lawrence
Miner's Memorial Museum takes visitors into
the past, featuring turn-of-the-century miners
tools, photos and other displays. For those
who enjoy the great outdoors, the Ski White
Hills resort just west of Clarenville has 15 runs
and lifts that can accommodate 3,800 people
an hour. There's also excellent cross-country
skiing in the area.

* Labrador Region: Like the areas of
Newfoundland, Labrador is also rich in history and culture. The Innu and Inuit have
lived in the area for thousands of years. The
oldest funeral monument in all of North
America, dating back 7,500 years, can be
found at L'Anse-Amour, where the Maritime
Archaic people buried a 12-year-old child.
The National Historic Site of Red Bay tells
the history of the first European settlers to the
region. The fishing port of Battle Harbour was
established during the 1750s, a must-see for
history buffs. There are several museums in
the area. The oldest building east of Montréal
can be found at Hopedale on the coast,
built in 1782. Point Amour has the tallest
lighthouse in Atlantic Canada, built in 1855
and rising 109 feet. Labrador is considered a
good spot for snowmobilers because of the
long winters and heavy snowfalls, and sportanglers will enjoy some of the best fishing in
the world.
* Western Region: This area of the province
is loaded with history, culture and adventure
opportunities; everything that any traveler
could want is here. Gros Morne National Park
features fjords, mountains, forest and shores,
offering more than 100 km of hiking trails. Its
landscape is so diverse and so beautiful that
the Park has been named a UNESCO World
Heritage Site. The Viking village of L'Anse
aux Meadows is a National Historic Site and
a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was the
first European settlement in North America,
dating back to 1000 AD. Parks Canada
has reconstructed a sod hut complex to

NEWFOUNDLAND & LABRADOR

Rich with history. Rife with culture. Sprawling
with natural beauty. All these wonders have
been in Newfoundland & Labrador for thousands of years, embraced by those who happened upon them. It's up to the traveler to enjoy
them, to go vigorously in search of people,
adventure, and experience.
The province of Newfoundland & Labrador
is more than 400,000 square kilometers, larger
than New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince
Edward Island combined. It boasts 17,000
kilometres of rugged coastline. Newfoundland
& Labrador has been shaped by its geography,
both its sheer size and its characteristics. Its
waters are home to some 22 species of whales,
dolphins, and porpoises. More seabirds make
their home on its shores than anywhere else
in the world. Its parks are home to caribou,
moose, and the Bald Eagle, just to name a few.
It is home to protected lands for wildlife and
rare flowers. The province's many ports offer
a glimpse of its sea-faring heritage. With such
diverse natural settings, plus modern cities and
historic sites, Newfoundland and Labrador offer
much for the tourist to see and do.
Newfoundland & Labrador is a place rooted
in history and peopled with indigenous cultures
and settlers from across the globe. There is
evidence of Viking settlement in Newfoundland
as early as 1000 AD. Fishers from Brittany,
Normandy and the Basque Country visited
the region starting in 1504. The last province
to enter the confederation in 1949, the region
was already rich with history and culture by the
time it joined Canada. Aboriginal, English, Irish
and French peoples had already been settled
here for centuries.
