here are many ways to assess the quality of the "culture" in an
organization. John Spence, former AENC presenter, said it wonderfully. "An
organization's culture is good when people enjoy coming to work as much
as they enjoy leaving work." That is a fair measurement tool, which while
potentially exposing, could be a good litmus test for all leaders when assessing the
temperature of their people. Mahatma Gandhi once said, "A nation's culture resides
in the heart and soul of its people." Is the same true about associations that an
association's culture resides in the heart and soul of its people?
Assessing the culture of an association is a worthy pursuit. We all want a positive
culture, but what exactly does that mean? Is it simply having members that attend
events and renew their memberships? Or making your budget? Or maintaining a
steady membership roster? While all of those are noble goals, I don't think they
define what we want as a "culture" for AENC.
Similar to Spence's definition, we want a culture where people engage in all aspects
of AENC life, they come to that engagement full of hope and anticipation of great
things to come, and they leave with results that exceeded their expectations.
Whether the engagement is education sessions, round-table discussions or
networking with fellow Members, delivering more, not less, is our goal. Our belief
is when we are successful in that pursuit, the goals mentioned above will be easily
achieved as a byproduct.
As leaders, we don't have the luxury of just participating in the culture of our
associations. We are obligated to create an environment where people cannot just
survive, but thrive. If we are successful creating the right environments for our
Members to thrive and we are united in the pursuit of our shared mission, perhaps
our associations may look favorable when measured against Gandhi's definition.
Recently, the AENC staff was humbled by some feedback we got after the Spring
Conference. While shared with us, this compliment was intended for the AENC
MEMBERS! This Member told us, "Thank you so much for having us. It was so nice
to be in an environment where we felt welcomed by all, and everyone we spoke with
seemed genuinely interested in who we were and why we were there."
This type of feedback makes me proud to be part of such a unique family of
professionals. Thank you to each Member who creates a welcoming, friendly and
positive culture at AENC. And you have our unwavering commitment, the staff and
I will continue doing everything possible to make the experience of being an AENC
Member, and our "culture," the very best it can be! z
