erving as the President of the Board for a non-profit is a time consuming
job that only a person of high integrity and dedication can excel at.
Often times, the men and women who serve in this capacity already have
significant demands on both their professional and personal time and Board
leadership consumes much of what's left. It is with the upmost respect I say "THANK
YOU" to Joe Stewart as he prepares to leave the office on August 31. His intellect,
passion, commitment and incredible humor have made serving under his Presidency
a pleasure. Personally, I appreciate the support and confidence Joe had in me last
year when, under his leadership, the Board offered me my current position. Then,
true to his word, he and the Board partnered with me to build a team and strategy
to lead AENC into tomorrow. We look forward to Joe's continued service on the
Executive Committee in the coming year as Immediate Past President.
Current AENC Board President-Elect, who will officially assume the seat of Board
President on September 1, is Susan Giver Nelson. In addition to a distinguished
career as Executive Director at SeaPerch Program, Association of Unmanned Vehicle
Systems International Foundation, Susan has been a steady and respected leader
at AENC for several years. We look forward to her dynamic leadership and vision.
In addition to the many strategic and operational objectives, Susan has a desire for
AENC to become an association that "gives back" more to the community, which we
are excited about!
In a recent FUEL Roundtable, presenter David Joyner challenged the attendees to
assess if and how we as non-profits "give back" to our communities. As CEO & ED of
AENC, I could not affirmatively answer this question and in light of the coming year
and President-Elect Nelson's goals, we decided it was time to act. It was time for
AENC to "give back."
The AENC staff decided to begin our campaign by each choosing a charity that had
personal significance and volunteer opportunities. Then, as a team, the three of us
would spend one day serving that charity. Madi selected WARM (The Wilmington
Area Revitalization Ministry). The AENC staff participated in a work day for that
charity on June 7th. Our team's task was to lay a linoleum floor in the kitchen and
two bathrooms. Mission accomplished! Now the homeowner, a lovely lady named
Brenda, has a home she is proud of with safe flooring. Jovita has chosen Raleigh
Habitat for Humanity with a workday planned in the fall. Once again our handyman
skills will be put to the test and once again we will represent AENC as a team.
We will miss Joe as the AENC Board President, we look forward to Susan's
leadership and we commit to becoming a more benevolent association. At AENC
like many associations, financial resources are tight and giving gifts of money is
not feasible. But we look forward to giving the gift of our time. In doing so, we get
a chance to strengthen the relationships on our team, build the AENC brand in our
communities, and help someone in need. A win-win-win!
Thank you for being an AENC Member and for the privilege of serving you! z
