AGC Idaho Helps Raise
$1 Million for Youth Scholarships
IDA HOA NS A RE KNOW N FOR being

generous with their time, and their willingness to donate valuable scrap metal
is helping to ensure students' success in
everything from academics to performing
arts to outdoor sports.
In 2000, Jackie and Bill "Action"
Jackson established the John William
Jackson Fund within the Idaho Community
Foundation shortly after the death of their
youngest son, John. He and his climbing
partner, Shou-Te from Taiwan, lost their
lives in a climbing accident in Central Asia.
Action, a former Morrison Knudsen
employee, took a creative approach to
raise money for the fund, coming up with
the idea to recycle metal on small and
major construction projects. In 2009, he
approached CM Company and Engineered
Structures Inc., two local general contractors and AGC Idaho members, and quickly
had them on board with the recycling program. He then contacted additional general contractors and their subcontractors.
It wasn't long before the fund established an operating division, the Idaho
Youth Education Recycling Partnership
(iYERP), with a mission to raise funds while
simultaneously advancing environmental stewardship on construction projects
through responsible metal recycling that
limits the impact at local landfills. The
Idaho AGC Chapter became a supporter
and helped get the word out to its members.
AGC was the first sponsor of iYERP's
annual Environmental Stewardship
Awards event. The event recognizes the
best environmental stewardship projects
- small, medium and large size - and four
levels of participation - bronze, silver, gold
and platinum.
iYERP, in conjunction with Pacific
Steel & Recycling, provides a variety of
metal recycling containers, at no cost, to
be filled at construction sites. The money

iYERP receives for the recycled metal is
treated as a tax-free donation from the
participating companies. The money is
then invested into Idaho's most important
resource: children and youth. In the last
three years alone, $402,000 was granted
for projects and programs that help ensure
academic achievement, appreciation of
the arts and future success for youth in
Idaho, eastern Oregon and Washington.
More than 150 companies are now
involved, and the list continues to grow.
iYERP, one of the top 10 metal recyclers,
also enjoys the support of the office of
Idaho Gov. C. L. "Butch" Otter. iYERP
has received numerous environmental
awards, including the U.S. Green Building
Council Idaho's Outstanding Leader in

Waste Reduction, Team Collaboration and
certification of LEED projects in Idaho. And
2017 will be a special year for iYERP, as its
partners and volunteers are positioned to
hit the $1 million mark in grants.
"Construction and recycling have been
a part of my life for years, and I am pleased
with the ongoing efforts and the support
of our volunteers, the Idaho AGC and its
members. The construction industry is
relationship-driven, and earning the support and encouragement of our partners is
essential," says Action.

recycling partnership, please contact Action
