Too Many Gifts
HOW A $5,000 BUDGET BECAME A $400,000 MIRACLE

from a few key individuals and organizations and being selected as the AGC
Charities Inc. Autodesk Operation Opening
Doors project, the Young Constructors
Forum (YCF) of the Nevada Contractors
Association (NCA) selected two projects for
simultaneous completion in 2017.
Located in the heart of a small two or
three block area unofficially known as the
Corridor of Hope, CARE Complex focuses on
support services for homeless individuals
in lieu of critical situation management -
which is provided at neighboring facilities.
The CARE facility was in very poor condition. Having been abandoned for years, it
was essentially a 5,000-sq-ft crack house
when CARE's director, Mike Swecker, purchased it in late 2014. Although they had
been making good use of the space since
that time, the structure was in need of
serious upgrades.
The second project was in the same
general area and would benefit another
great organization called Gentlemen by
Choice (GBC) - a male youth enrichment
program that uses community partners
and mentors to provide training in the
areas of leadership, image, financial management and etiquette. Their existing
facility was in a great location because
it was within walking distance of the
homes of their mentees - many of whom
don't have reliable and positive male
role models in their lives. GBC's director,
Antanus Pullum, wanted a space where
these young men could grow and learn in
a safe environment.
The needs of these two organizations
meshed well with the skills and resources
that the committee could provide. Nate
Jacobs (McCarthy) and Lindsay Howard
(Commercial Roofers) would lead the
CARE renovations. Tim Bennett (Burke
Construction) and Deric Moffett (GSL
Electric) would handle GBC.

Mark Knight, AGC's 2016 president, speaks at the Autodesk Operation Opening Doors
project in Las Vegas.

On the morning of Jan. 11, 2017, several YCF members met at CARE for the
first time. It was at that meeting that the
vision for these projects really began to
change. When looking at the address, 200
Foremaster Lane, on Google's street view,
two things jump out: the sheer number
of homeless filling the street and a freestanding water dispenser like the kind
you have in your company break room.
Many of the YCF members were longtime Vegas residents or had grown up in
this valley. Very few had any idea that
the Corridor of Hope even existed. They
learned that six people had died there from
exposure during the summer of 2015. After
the sixth death occurred - literally at their
doorstep - CARE Complex knew they had
to do something. So they took their water
dispenser and plugged it in out front where

people could access it from the street. And
then they refilled it multiple times per day
... every day for months.
No one died in 2016 due to exposure.
It was that spirit of doing what they
could with what they had, that really resonated with YCF. Their budget was literally
$5,000 for these two projects on the morning of Jan. 11. Over the next month, it grew
to nearly $400,000 worth of upgrades - all
of it donated. As Nate Jacobs commented,
once we explained the situation to members, "the response was almost too much
to handle."
But thanks to the hard work and dedication of the many YCF members, their
supportive organizations and the help of
AGC Charities Inc., the two projects were a
huge success. They even plumbed a commercial grade water fountain out front. ◆
