meetings, she is also on deck for all safety celebrations and
other celebrations.
Bellows' personal commitment to keeping her employees
safe - something she so passionately expressed to the CSEA
award judges during the final presentation - was very likely a
big factor in winning the award, Lee says.
"She also follows through with actions which reinforce that
commitment," he says. "She is the controlling owner of the
company, and it starts at the top. You have to have that or you
don't have anything at all."

ZERO IS THE HERO
The firm's commitment to safety is evident in its safety statistics last year: zero lost work-day cases and zero restricted
work-day cases.
"We stand on our solid reputation of valuing employees at every
level as evidenced in 14 out the last 16 years - and a streak of
the last seven years - without a lost time accident," Lee says.
Founded in 1914, the company began in Canada, relocated
to Kansas City, and in 1920, moved to Oklahoma City. In 1936,
Bellows moved its headquarters to Houston after being awarded
the contract to build the landmark San Jacinto Monument and
has been Houston-based ever since. Bellows Construction is a

commercial general contracting firm which builds in many market
sectors including performing art centers, theatres, museums, office
buildings, retail buildings, hospitals, research facilities, hotels,
churches, energy industry office and support facilities, tenant
build-outs and complete building renovations.
The contractor's continued commitment to safety has earned
it at least 95 safety awards throughout its history.
"Workers change over the years, and we have to be able
to adapt our safety program accordingly," Lee says. "With the
increase of Spanish-speaking workers in the industry, we've
added bilingual safety folks and bilingual foremen, and we
require our subs to do the same. Also, each generation of workers
which comes on board is different and requires that we teach
things in different ways or by using different methods."

SHARING IS CARING
The firm also shares information about its safety program with
several other organizations, including Houston's Construction
Career Collaborative, which has safety training as part of the
program.
"C3 is an alliance of socially responsible owners, contractors,
and specialty contractors, that positively affect the issues facing the craft worker for the commercial construction industry,"
