THE ROLE OF THE specialty contractor

A NEW PART TO PLAY

has changed, and that change begins
from the ground down. Excavation contractors are finding that the new forms
of project delivery are casting them in a
new role. Specialists are no longer just
the metaphoric "pair of hands" that do
the job, but also subject matter experts
who help identify constructable solutions.
Simultaneous with this expansion of
the job has come the challenge of the
labor shortage and the growth of safety
culture, as well as the do-or-die necessity
to keep up with technological advances
to stay competitive. How do excavation
specialists stay in business? By stepping
over these hurdles and expanding their
repertoire to include more specialties.

Greg Boelke, president, Veit
Construction, a member of multiple AGC
chapters, has been in the business 40
years. "It used to be a situation where the
architect came with the plans. Here's the
project. You bid it, you build it, you get
paid for it. Now it's evolved to the contractor being more of a partner. The project is
not completely designed when you get in,
and you provide the service of being an
innovator and problem solver along the
way. We may bid a project three or four
times before it's all dialed in."
Victor DiGeronimo, Jr., president,
Independence Excavating, Inc., an AGC
of Ohio member, has also observed
this trend. "You start with unfinished

drawings, and everybody's involved from
start to finish." DiGeronimo points out
the advantage this brings in terms of
the quality of the project: "Everybody
tries to add value in their area, to do it
as cost effectively as you can, but at the
best value."

SURVIVAL STRATEGIES
The DiGeronimo Companies are a
group of family businesses with a 60-year
history that started with a single piece of
equipment. "My grandfather was a mason
who built houses. He co-signed a loan
for a track loader, so my dad and uncle
could dig his basements." Veit followed a
similar path, evolving from a single truck
that hauled dirt in 1928.
