our operators to excavate and grade as
productively as possible without having
to stop and wait for survey control and
survey layout. It helps us on some aspects
where we had to dig to a specific grade to
remove known waste and allows progress
to continue uninterrupted with waiting for
a survey to come out."
Other tech advances are also making
an impact on the bottom line for excavators. "We did a job last year," recalls
Boelke, "four million cubic yards, and
every week we flew over it with a drone,
gave the USB card with the video to the

state; that's how we got paid. It would
have taken a surveyor two days to walk
that and get us paid. We have an excavator boom that goes 139 feet. We put a
crusher on the end of it to take down a
building. I don't think we own a wrecking
ball anymore."

THE LABOR GAP
Despite the dominance of technology in
modern excavation, the business remains
very dependent on human labor and intelligence, and the labor shortage has had a
strong impact on excavation contractors.

It's forced contractors to be more proactive
and creative in finding workers.
"Getting people who can do it and
want to do it is super difficult," explains
DiGeronimo. "It's a tough job atmosphere.
You talk about working in a Ford factory
in climate-controlled conditions versus
working on the jobsite; that's a tough
sell. We have a full-time talent-recruiting
specialist. We also have a really good
intern program. We probably employ 20
interns a year; that's one way to get our
future stars."
"We always are recruiting," exclaims
Boelke. "But with that said, our primary
focus is training. We probably invest
25-30 percent more of our time, energy
and money to train our personnel than in
previous times." Where Viet used to send
a craftsman or equipment operator to the
union hall for a week of training, they
now get two weeks from the union and
an additional one or two weeks-period
training internally.

NEW OSHA SILICA STANDARD
REAL-TIME CHALLENGES REQUIRE
REAL-TIME SOLUTIONS FROM TSI

OSHA's new silica ruling has made silica dust monitoring and control a real-time
issue for protecting workers. Real-time monitoring solutions from TSI can:
+ Shorten the path to compliance
+ Streamline the dust
measurement process
+ Provide the immediate exposure data
to drive quick corrective action

+ Lower associated costs
+ Reduce potential silica
exposure to workers and
surrounding environments

The growth of safety culture has
affected excavation and the entire construction industry generally. Geisler
expressed it in a way that's echoed in many
companies: "Safety around here is almost
like a religion. We talk about it daily." Veit
even made it part of their brand, with the
motto "Safe By Choice" emblazoned right
under their name on their equipment, their
hardhats and their letterhead.
Shawn Link, senior project man12:20 am ager, Grunley Construction, an AGC of
Metropolitan Washington D.C. member,
has observed a significant shift in attitude
about safety not only at the corporate level,
but among the rank and file. "I've seen a
greater acceptance of the PPE requirements as they've become more standardized across all projects. Our company's
requirements, which used to be looked at
as the most stringent, are becoming the
norm across the board."
Safety has also become a sales point.
DiGeronimo points out that many large
corporation clients insist on a good safety
record as part of awarding a contract.
While the new emphasis on safety began
with regulation from OSHA, DiGeronimo
believes that by now, the culture of the
industry has genuinely shifted. "It's the
way it should be," he adds.
