Learning from and Teaching Each Other
A CONSTRUCTION FIRM FINDS a way to completely rebuild a historic motorsports racetrack,

AGC PRESIDENT

One of the main
points of being
involved in AGC is to
have an opportunity
to learn from, and
teach, our peers
within the industry.

even as the facility hosts dozens of races and is visited by hundreds of thousands of people.
A group of contractors building a new light rail system decide to spend their precious free
time turning a vacant piece of land into a sensory garden for a local school for the visually
impaired. And contractors in Houston find new ways to keep their workers healthy and safe.
What do these three firms have in common? In addition to being members, they were all
recognized during this year's annual convention in Las Vegas. Barton Malow won our Alliant
Build America Grand Award for its work rebuilding the Daytona International Speedway's
Grandstand. A joint venture between Herzog and Stacy & Witbeck won the AGC in the
Community Award for its efforts to build the garden. And Bellows Construction took the top
prize in the Willis Towers Watson Construction Safety Excellence Awards.
There are two reasons why we recognize members for the quality of the work they perform: the strength of their safety programs and the impact of their community service. First,
we want to honor members for the good work they do. But even more important, we want
to share their lessons with the rest of our members to help elevate our entire industry. After
all, one of the main points of being involved in AGC is to have an opportunity to learn from,
and teach, our peers within the industry.
This is exactly the kind of learning that took place throughout the annual convention, and
not just during our various awards competitions. We make a point of ensuring that members
are part of each of the educational sessions we host during the convention on topics as varied
as workforce development, using new technology and Lean construction, among others. And
we build in ample time between sessions so members can share stories, build their networks
and learn from each other over coffee, lunch or evening drinks.
And if for some reason you were not able to attend this year's convention, we still want
to make sure you have an opportunity to learn the same lessons as the nearly 3,000 people
who joined us in Las Vegas. That is why we craft white papers on the lessons learned from
our Alliant Build America and safety award winners and share them with members. And
that is why we make available, for a nominal fee, the educational content that is offered to
convention-goers.
But, it is hard to get as much out of a Power Point presentation as from face-to-face contact
with peers. There is just too much that comes with being in the same room and getting an
opportunity to ask questions and clarify specific points. That is why I want to make sure you
are saving the date for next year's annual convention in New Orleans, from Feb. 26-28. And
since next year is our centennial year, we will have another opportunity to learn from each
other during our Centennial Celebration on Oct. 1, in Washington, D.C.
During that event in the nation's capital, we will be announcing the winners of a new
competition being organized by our Construction Leadership Council. The new Innovation
Awards will challenge students and young construction professionals to propose innovative
solutions to some of the most pressing challenges facing our industry. The applications process
for this and our other awards programs will open later this year at the end of the summer.
I hope as many of our member firms and young professionals apply for one or more of our
awards so we can learn from their successes and their innovations when we gather next
year in Crescent City and later in the District of Columbia.
