EDITOR'S NOTE

Po-Boys and Puppies

BY JEANIE J. CLAPP
EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
SPEAKING ONLY FOR MYSELF of course,

but any convention that has both po-boys
and puppies is a win in my book. For the
thousands of construction professionals
from across the U.S. who flocked to New
Orleans for AGC of America's 99th Annual
Convention, they got that and more. Those
who attended conventions in years past
knew that this year - the 100th anniversary of the association - would be spectacular. And though newbies - first-timers
(and no doubt future attendees) - may have
only heard that in passing, they selected
the right year to attend. AGC delivered a
NOLA experience not to be forgotten, from
award ceremonies and education sessions, to yes, po-boys and puppies. (Don't
believe me on the latter? Check out the
photo spread on page 25.)
Every year at its convention, AGC of
America celebrates its members' outstanding accomplishments during several

award ceremonies. In New Orleans, AGC
of America and Willis Towers Watson
honored 59 construction firms at the
Construction Safety Excellence Awards
(CSEA) breakfast - an event where camaraderie wins over competition and people
over projects. Keeping the spotlight on
construction workers coming home safely
every night is important, said Bill Noonan
of Willis Towers Watson, the sponsor of the
safety awards program, and that's what
the CSEA program does. Eighteen firms
received third-place honors, there were 20
second-place winners and 21 first-place
award recipients. From the first-place winners, the "best of the best," or grand award
winner, was selected. The 2018 recipient
is Rosendin Electric, based out of San Jose,
California. Read more about this firm on
pages 28-33.
 The Construction Risk Partners Build
America Awards took place on Tuesday, Feb.
27 and bestowed 13 merit awards and 19
Construction Risk Partners Build America
Awards to projects that have excelled in
state-of-the-art achievement, excellence
in project management, innovation, superior client service, and more. Considered
the construction industry's 'Oscars,' these
awards are given to projects selected by a
panel of contractors that represent the best
new and renovation construction projects
in 13 different categories. Mercedes-Benz
Stadium, by contractor Holder-HuntRussell-Moody, JV was deemed the most
impressive construction project of 2017 and
named the 2018 Construction Risk Partners
Build America Grand Award winner. This
project is featured on pages 20-23.

At the Closing Session on Feb. 28,
2018, AGC dished out more impressive
awards. AGC of Texas was honored with
the AGC in the Community Award Chapter
for organizing a hurricane relief fund for the
maintenance crews of the Texas Department
of Transportation (TxDOT). In addition, AGC
in the Community awards were given to
GH Phipps Construction Companies, Davis
Constructors and Engineers, Hensel and,
the AGC Georgia Young Leadership Program.
New this year were the Diversity and
Inclusion Excellence Awards, recognizing companies and chapters whose efforts
foster a diverse and inclusive construction industry. San Francisco's Yerba Buena
Engineering and Construction was named
as the first-ever Diverse Business of the
Year award winner. The association also
awarded Diversity and Inclusion Excellence
Awards to Austin Commercial, based in the
Texas state capital, in the large contractor
category; Bjork Construction in Fremont,
California, won for a small contractor;
and Massachusetts Port Authority for a service or supply firm. The Diversity & Inclusion
Chapter Award went to the San Antonio
Chapter of AGC.
Three student construction chapters were
also honored at the Closing Session. Iowa
State University was named student chapter
of 2017. California State University, Chico
and Boise State University were the second
and third place winners, respectively.
There's no way to summarize all of the
events that took place in New Orleans on
this one page or even in one issue, but rest
assured if there were po-boys and puppies,
it was bound to be great.
