Reminders of What Makes Our Association So Great
CONTRACTORS PRACTICING FOR A grilling about the strength of their safety program.

BY EDDIE STEWART
AGC PRESIDENT

With more than
2,700 people in
attendance, New
Orleans was our
largest convention
since 2009.

Builders who found a new way to keep an insanely complex stadium project on schedule
and on budget. Students who spent their college vacations rebuilding homes and lives across
the country. A firm that has excelled by hiring from the neediest parts of its home town.
Contractors who walked Anchorage's streets barefoot to stop the trafficking of women. And
construction professionals who are finding new ways to solve some of the industry's most
pressing problems. These are just some of the inspiring stories that were part of this year's
AGC of America annual convention at the end of February.
The examples above reflect on the amazing projects, firms and people who were recognized during the convention. You will be reading their stories in this and upcoming issues
of Constructor. They are all truly impressive. But even as we were being inspired by these
award winners, there were many other reasons to be reminded of what has made our association so great for the past 100 years.
One reminder of this was the sheer number of people who made the time to attend our
annual convention. With more than 2,700 people in attendance, New Orleans was our largest convention since 2009. Indeed, we had nearly 8 percent more people there than during
last year's Las Vegas convention when CONEXPO-CON/AGG typically drives our numbers up.
It was also impressive to see so much support during the convention for our AGC Education
& Research Foundation, which netted over $300,000 in contributions to help fund scholarships and faculty internships nationwide. And the groundswell of support for the AGC
Charities project to build a new national headquarters for the Warrior Canine Connection
was equally heartwarming.
Even more inspiring were the many success stories and lessons that members shared
with each other. Much of this learning took place during the robust educational sessions that
were scheduled throughout the meeting. Equally inspiring were the many ad hoc interactions that took place between members during the networking sessions, social functions
and countless other gatherings.
And of course, how can you not be impressed with the hundreds of college students
who took time away from their studies to learn more about our industry by attending the
convention? Having the students there added even more energy to what was already an
upbeat gathering. No doubt the fact the event took place in New Orleans had some impact
on the student turnout?
The simple explanation for the many inspirational stories, the tremendous energy, the
incredible philanthropy and the amazing turnout is that contractors are impressive people.
Every day they take on great risk to overcome obstacles and build magnificent projects. And
as they continue to evolve and improve their operations, so too will AGC of America continue
to evolve so we can continue to help this industry thrive for the next 100 years.
