Treasure Trove ORIGINAL AGC CHARTER DISCOVERED IN ATTIC BY JENNIFER P. LANDAU PROJECT MANAGER LANDAU BUILDING COMPANY At the JAn. 16, 2015, Master Builders' Association of Western Pennsylvania (MBA) business meeting, a special presentation was made by CEO and past president of the board of directors for the MBA, Tom Landau. In his attic, he found the MBA's original Association of General Contractors (AGC) charter certificate from 1922. The MBA was established in 1886, as a group of contractors organized to fulfill a need for a unified representation during labor negotiations. At that time, they recognized the value of promoting the common interests of the industry and the need to establish guidelines for quality and professionalism. The AGC was established in 1918 when President Woodrow Wilson saw the need for a national cooperative effort on the construction industry. Today the AGC consists of over 33,000 construction contractors organized into 92 chapters throughout the 50 states and Puerto Rico. In 1922, the MBA was recognized as one of the founding chapters of the AGC. Now why was the charter certificate in Tom Landau's attic? In the 1920s, Jacob Landau, Tom's great-grandfather, was on the MBA board of directors. At that time, there was a lot of push back from the MBA members to drop all AGC ties. They were not seeing any local value in paying dues to a national organization, but we believe Jake Landau was one of the strong advocates for keeping the ties and therefore may have ended up with the original charter. Landau Building Company has a long history with the MBA. Not only was Jacob involved in the 1920s, Jacob's son Calvin was elected president of the association in 1939. Cal "Buck" Landau was on the board of directors and a trustee of CAP (Construction Advancement Program of Western PA) in the 1950/60s. Thomas J. Landau was board president from 1965-1967. And Tom served as board president from 2010 - 2012 and continues to serve as a board member. Tom also found a picture from the very first AGC national convention, with all the 70 constructor | Ju ly/ Au g u st 2015 Thomas Landau, past president of the MBA of Western Pennsylvania board of directors (center), holds the original charter while Jack Ramage, executive director (left), and Dean Mosites, current president (right), look on. At a Jan. 16, 2015, MBA of Western Pennsylvania business meeting, Thomas Landau (center) holds a photo from the first AGC national convention, with Jack Ramage (left) and Dean Mosites (right) at his side. attendees and their spouses on the front of the White House lawn. It looks as though President Calvin Coolidge is standing front and center. It has been said that one of the seminars at this convention was devoted to the need to repeal the multiple prime delivery system requirement laws, which is sort of ironic that a century later we are still talking about the same issue. ◆ In 2018, AGC of America will celebrate its 100-year anniversary as the leading organization in the construction industry. AGC welcomes your photos and stories as it prepares for this commemorative event. Contact Brian Turmail, executive director, public affairs, AGC of America, at (703) 837-5310 or turmailb@agc.org.
