"Design choices may be made which have code-related impacts, and it's up to the architects, contractors, and suppliers to understand and follow the code requirements," Greene says. Although these projects are generally less complicated from a code perspective, there are important code considerations, she says. For example, the hardware selected must meet the requirements for accessibility, egress and fire protection, if applicable. In most jurisdictions across the U.S., a building code is adopted for use during construction and design, and the adopted fire code is used during the life of the building. Additional codes and standards may also be used.  Code requirements can vary depending on the type of project, but there are some code requirements such as access control that are common in retail and office projects, Greene says. "More office projects, whether they are new projects or retrofits, now have readers with electrified hardware to control who can access a building or area," she says. "But the electrified hardware that interfaces with the readers must allow free egress in most applications, so the egress requirements must be carefully considered."
