EDITOR'S NOTE Taking Action SOMETIMES IT TAKES A few hard knocks in life to learn a lesson. One car breakin and you will never leave electronics on the back seat again. One stolen bike and you vow to lock it up always. For all the many kind-hearted and honest people in the world, there are unfortunately a few bad apples. And, let's face it: if you have something worth taking, there's someone who's going to grab it, given the opportunity. BY JEANIE J. CLAPP EDITOR-IN-CHIEF You, as contractors, know better than anyone the importance of keeping jobs on schedule, paying employees on time, and running your operation efficiently. A cybercrime could put a serious glitch in the construction life you lead. That's why we're talking cyberattacks in this issue of Constructor. It may be one of our more sinister topics, but with contractors relying more and more on technology in the office and on the jobsite, our cover story, "Cybercrime: Why You're Most Certainly at Risk," is a timely read. Think you're protected? You may be today, but if you're not proactive and aggressive, you may not be tomorrow. As the article warns, "If you use the internet or email - and who doesn't - your company is at risk." We all lock our doors at night, secure our cars in the mall parking lot, and protect our wallet in a crowded town square. And we teach our kids to do the same. So, why get sloppy with critical business information? You, as contractors, know better than anyone the importance of keeping jobs on schedule, paying employees on time, and running your operation efficiently. A cybercrime could put a serious glitch in the construction life you lead. Take action today for a better night's sleep tonight. Yes, changing your passwords on a regular basis may be a nuisance, and investing in anti-malware software may be costly, but the threat of serious damage is real. It's worth the time to put measures in place to mitigate the risk. Learn this lesson the easy way, by being proactive and taking action now. Just as serious as cybercrime is the upcoming presidential election. One of two unpopular candidates will likely be elected to lead this country. Election Day is no time to be idle. You may be ready for the campaigning to end, and you may not be enamored with either nominee, but now is not the time to disengage. There is much at stake in this election for construction, and the industry needs your support. Take action on Nov. 8: make your voice heard and vote. ◆ Have a story idea or information you'd like to share with AGC members? Contact me at constructor@naylor.com.
