job I brought him. Based on the applicators recommendation, I agreed
to go with the Diamond Vogel product. That was in 2006, and knowing
the client, if there have been any problems, I would have heard about
them, but I have not.
The AGA's website addresses different paints and primers, how
they work (or not) when applied to zinc. The following is copied from
the AGA site and is appropriate for our use.
Epoxy-Polyamide Cured has superior adherence to galvanized steel.
Aliphatic Polyurethanes, if used as a top coat for a polyamide epoxy
primer, it is considered a superior duplex system.
Latex-Acrylics (not simply latex, which is not recommended) has
the added benefit of being environmentally friendly. I do not have
experience with latex-acrylics.
Or, if you are:
Painting Steel that has not Been Galvanized
Here is what works where my products typically go, in the state
of Minnesota.
A. Google: Minnesota Department of Transportation (www.dot.state.
mn.us)
B. Once on the MnDot page, left side, go to Topics A-Z
C. On the Topics A-Z page, scroll down and open up Approved/Qualified
Products list
D. Once on the Approved/Qualified Products page, scroll down to
Paint/Stain/Coating Systems (non-Pavement)
E. On the Paint/Stain/Coating Systems (non-pavement) page, open
up Bridge Structural Steel Coatings

On this page, you will find specifications for painting steel that has
not been galvanized. The MnDot web page does not specify one single
brand of paint. Instead, it lists different manufacturers and approved
combinations of their paints.
With the state approved list in hand, if you are not a knowledgeable
painter, the information will help you ask the right person the right questions.
Keep in mind the drying times when purchasing approved paints.
Gate Series Conclusion
This is the last installment in The Collective Mind Gate Series. A
couple parting thoughts I would like to include are:
A. If you have a small shop, two large driveway gates could be achieved
by building four gate sections (quadrants) and then assembling the
sections on site, or outside your shop.
B. When laying out tall gates, draw on a grid, reproducing a smaller
drawing with a corresponding grid. And, even with a grid, walk
around on top of your layout, so you can view the decorative elements with a perpendicular line of sight. Do not build your gates
over a drawing with a foreshortened view. With a project like tall
gates, the distortion created with a foreshortened view will change
the look of the gates dramatically.
As always with the Collective Mind Gate Series, if you have anything
you would like to add, feel free to email your thoughts to the O&MM
Fabricator Editor, Marbella Miller at marbella@naylor.com.
The joy is in the journey.
