trictly speaking, logic proscribes say
there's no such thing as a white crow.
The best you can say is that no one has
seen one, yet. Similarly, no one has ever
seen a job without change orders. But as
a matter of practical application, let's just
say that if you have a job, you're gonna
have change orders.
So stop worrying about whether you'll
get change orders (oh, you'll get them),
and start thinking about how you're going
to handle them.
Let's start with a primer on change
orders. A change order is just jargon
for saying you're going to deviate from
the original contract. And by the way, a

contract is simply an agreement between
two parties that meets the following criteria: an offer, and acceptance of the
offer; exactly (or as close as possible)
what the terms of the agreement are;
and an exchange of consideration, which
means somebody gives something (like
work) and gets something (like money)
in return. Two signatures will seal the
deal, or contract.
Because you need two people to make
a contract, you need two people to change
one. That means that a change order is
necessarily a bilateral deal. One party
to the contract may call for the change
order, but the other party must agree to it.

And indicate such with a signature. That
includes any results of the change order,
such as changes in costs, schedule, or
completion dates.
The main thing here is to view the
change order as a little contract within
the main contract. So like any contract,
you have to identify its terms. And like any
contract, both parties have to agree on it.
While change orders can occur for various and sundry reasons, there are three
that occur most frequently.
Often, the reason for a change order is
simply money. Or lack thereof. The client
may run out of money, or funds might not
come through, so the original contract has
