up the bender fast and easy; and C) the arbor.
In this article, we will focus on the arbor and
how it functions.
The arbor the swing-arm rotates around,
is not attached to the frame. The arbor simply  drops through holes in the swing-arm
and frame. Then, assuming the arbor is
evenly lubricated, the arbor rotates randomly,
like the hinge-pin that it is. The arbor does not
fall all the way through the bender, because
there is a shelf beneath the frame the arbor
sits on.
Hossfeld 101
Whether or not the arbor will be rotating
in the bender needs to be addressed if you
want predictable bends. The arbor can be
controlled with friction, to rotate or remain
stationary. But first - Sketches #1 and #2. If
the bender is set-up so the arbor will rotate
with the swing-arm, the rotating arbor and
swing-arm will pull the metal needed for the
bend in from the back side of the bender and
into the bend being made.
Sketches #3 and #4. The bender can also
be set-up so that it prevents the arbor from
rotating with the swing-arm. When the arbor
is not rotating, metal for the bend is consumed
from the operator's side of the bender.
Or, if the bender is not set-up correctly,
allowing the arbor to rotate sporadically,
the bend may or may-not end up where you
planned on it being in the metal.

Why would someone care whether
metal will be pulled in from the back
or consumed from the front side of
the bender?

A. A person only needs to remember that
metal to be bent will not always be positioned
in the bender coming from the same direction.
Keeping an open mind regarding the metal
positioning avoids confusion when setting
up the bender.
What is important to know is whether or
not the arbor will be rotating. The set-up
person cares about this, because laying
out the bend on the metal is different for a
rotating arbor than it is for an arbor that will
remain stationary.
Sketches #5 and #6. The layout on the metal
when the arbor will be rotating ends where the
metal meets the arbor. The rotating swing-arm
and arbor will pull the laid-out area on the
metal into the bend.

Sketches #7 and #8. Conversely, the layout
area when the arbor will remain stationary
starts where the metal meets the arbor. When
metal is held stationary, the swing-arm-dog
slides on, or a roller in the swing-arm rolls
against, the static metal and pushes it around
the arbor.

Rotating the Arbor with Pressure
Sketches #9, #10 and #11. We can make the
arbor rotate by applying pressure with the
dog or a wedge. This pressure pushes
the  steel and arbor back in the top hole,
drilled in the swing-arm where the arbor
passes through (Sketch #11). This pressure
