Gargantuan, Pet-Inspired Fountain

and across national borders, Robinson Iron,
of Alexander City, Alab., recently installed
their largest fountain to-date at Berczy Park
in Toronto, Canada.
Nestled within the center of the city's most
iconic green space, the 30,000-pound fountain
pays tribute to the 2,000 dogs and cats that
visit the park daily.
The fountain, a collaboration between
landscape architect Claude Cormier of Claude
Cormier + Associés and Robinson Iron, contains 27 dog statutes, a single cat and golden
bone as the crown. Not only that, but pug faces
adorn the circumference of the two tiers and
serve as waterspouts to fill its bottom trough
with drinking water for the city's furry friends.
While Claude Cormier + Associés provided
the design, it was Robinson Iron who brought
the engineering expertise to the make the
whimsical vision a reality.
"The dog sculptures were very interesting
and probably the most difficult to create...
sculptures like that can be a challenge even

after the pattern work is done because
there may be a lot pieces to weld," said Luke
Robinson, sales and marketing manager of
Robinson Iron. "It's like a complex puzzle - the
joints need to be cleaned thoroughly, so as to

Composed of cast iron, stainless steel and
cast aluminum, the canine and feline masterpiece were almost all built in the company's
Alabama facility. Nearly every member of their
30-person team helped with its completion,
many of who are dog lovers.
"My mom has always been involved with
the Lake Martin Humane Society, and I can't
remember a time when my parents had fewer
than two dogs in the house," Robinson said.
In total, the fountain took about a year in a
half from beginning to end. J. Scott Howell,
one of Robinson Iron's founders and the
company's general manager, led the team
to transport the fountain to its Canadian home
this past July.
While the fountain is currently installed, the
water and some of the animal statues have
not yet been placed due to the winter season.
Berczy Park will officially reopen in spring
2017 where the fountain will be unveiled in
Although Robinson has not seen the fountain in person, hearsay from Howell is that it
is pretty glorious and inspiring.
"Hopefully this fountain will inspire
other unique ideas for fountains in other
locations. That seems to happen a lot with
us! Work begets more work as Scot ty
