SHOPTALK

Francis Hazel
ROBERT WALSH

M

y name is Mike. I am a maintenance man, a janitor, in a local
fabricating shop. The fabricating shop is appropriately named
the Fab Shop. I have a cart. In my cart is a garbage can,
brooms, a dust pan and cleaning supplies.
One of the interesting aspects of my job is that I can go
almost anywhere in the Fab Shop and not be noticed. In
the eyes of people working, if they are really working, I'm
invisible.
Being invisible, I often feel I can be a product/process spy
or a gossip source if anyone asked. If someone asked, I'd
decline. What we manufacture is not classified information,
and drama doesn't interest me.
Why am I writing this text? I'm not a metal worker, but most
of the people I work around are. Recently, the Fab Shop hired
a new employee named Hazel. Hazel is young, enthusiastic,
and just out of trade school. Hazel is smart and learns quickly,
but she has a lot to learn.
On the shop floor, Francis is the foreman, also known as,
France-the-foreman. Francis is kind, old, and has worked
with metals all his life. Francis has a grandfatherly demeanor
that redefines the word "mellow." Francis might not know
everything about metals, but he has been around the block
a few times.
While being invisible on the shop floor, I've observed Hazel
asking Francis various metal-working questions. Francis
patiently educates her.
Some of the dialogue between Francis and Hazel will be
what I write about in coming articles. Here we go.

Francis and Hazel
While pushing my broom around on Hazel's first day, I
noticed her standing next to a Hossfeld Bender. She was
examining a piece of metal she had apparently bent, with a
perplexed look on her face. I noticed Francis also observing
Hazel's confused expression. Francis walked over to see
how she was doing. This was the beginning of their working
relationship. I thought this might be interesting, so I pushed
my cart over and cleaned her area for a while, observing the
interactions between Francis and Hazel.
Hazel asked Francis, "When I bend this 5/16" × 1" × 1/2"
around the teardrop mandrel in the Hossfeld, it appears
I'm having two problems. First, the metal cups in the bend
(sketch #1); and secondly, I apparently don't know how to
calculate the length of the metal, so the bent metal matches
the blueprint." She continued on, "France, I'm not doing well
with this simple project. This is both frustrating and embarrassing. Can you help me out?"
Mellow Francis patiently replied, "Your assessment of
the two problems is very good. Let's address them one at
a time."
Cupped Metal Around Bends
Francis proceeds, "Bending metal can be trickier than it
appears to be." He then gave Hazel his standard disclaimer
by telling her, "I know a little about a lot of things, but
not a lot about a few things. I'll tell you what little I know
about bending."
