You Spoke, and We Listened
ALLYN MOSELEY, NOMMA PRESIDENT
saying..."We are all born
with two ears and one mouth, which would
seem to indicate that we all need to listen
twice as much as we talk." That's good advice
for life in general, but it also came to mind
when the NOMMA board assembled a task
force to find out what our members were
saying and what they expected out of their
NOMMA membership, specifically what they
wanted out of their METALfab experience.
We listened and some very telling information
came out of that effort.
ThErE is AN OLD
More relevant Education
For this year, we have tapped two NOMMA
veterans to work with the NEF Education
Committee as METALfab2016 Education
Co-chairs; Curt Witter with Big D Metalworks
and Doug Bracken with Wiemann Metalcraft.
Both of these gentlemen run highly successful
businesses, they both know what it takes to
be successful, and they both have served as
NOMMA presidents in the past. I'm excited
to have them in charge of this critical component of METALfab. Great care is being taken
to construct an education program that will
be extremely useful and practical in today's
business environment. Also, we are paying
particular attention to the abilities of those
who are heading up the individual sessions.
Be on the lookout for a completed education
schedule in the near future.
More relevant Demonstrations
Demonstrations have always been a
challenge given the restrictions of the host
venue and the increased safety regulations
we always have to operate within. So this
year, incorporated within the week's activities
will be a one-day event that will be packed
with hands-on demos and instruction on a
variety of topics. This will be an event unlike
anything you've seen at METALfab before.
We have demos planned that include forging
techniques presented by Phil Heermance of
Art's Work, a master metal crafter, and multi
Top Job award winner. There will also be a
demonstration session on fabricating kitchen
vent hoods. Vent hoods are popular right now
and are being requested by designers and
architects all over the country. The custom
aspect of these are profitable, and we will be
showing you how to use templates to take all
of the guess work out of it and speed up the
fabrication process. Also on tap will be a full
day seminar on copper lighting fabrication
and how you can upsell a client by incorporating design elements from other work you are
providing into lighting and things like fireplace
screens. This is just a sampling of what will
be going on during that day with all of these
being "hands on," where you will be encouraged to step up and try these techniques for
yourself. Also, many of our vendors who have
limited abilities to display their product(s) at
the trade show will be there displaying fully
powered and operated equipment.
More Entertainment Options
METALfab 2016 takes place at the Hyatt
in downtown Greenville, South Carolina.
The Greenville downtown area is consistently rated as one of the best in the entire
country with over 150 different restaurants
within walking distance of our host hotel. In
addition, there are many other entertainment
opportunities including The Peace Center
for the Performing Arts and the Children's
Museum. Again, all within walking distance
of the hotel. I would encourage you to go
to www.visitgreenvillesc.com and click on
"Downtown" to find out more.
All of us on the board are committed to making this event one to remember. So reserve
March 16-19 of next year, and I promise you
will not be disappointed.
