the P3 Summit will set the stage for the pest
management industry's future.
A SHARED VISION
During the first two days of the P3 Summit,
Tindol said the group focused on identifying
current conditions and trends. They also discussed future assumptions about the industry
related to demographics, the business and
economic climate, legislation and regulations,
technology and science, and political and social
values. "Focusing on these areas will allow the
industry to purposefully update the strategic
plan on an annual basis and ensure the ongoing
relevancy of the goals," he emphasized.
In these discussions, the group highlighted
a few interesting future assumptions, such as:
* Urbanization will lead to new pest threats
* Demographic changes will affect the economic future
* The American Dream is changing
* The energy crisis is likely to affect the
economy
* Technology will change the way we do
business
* Millennials are coming into the market
* Politics will impact taxes, home values and
expendable income
* Regulations will mandate hiring/employment
* Commoditization of the industry
* Technological advances (drones, intelligent
homes/equipment)
* Bugs will always come back
Based upon these conversations, the group
defined new mission, vision and core purpose
statements for the NPMA as follows:
* Mission Statement: NPMA supports members in being professional, knowledgeable,
and profitable through education, industry
leadership, public policy advocacy, growth
of the market.

* Core Purpose: Our mission is your protection.
* Vision: Every household and business uses
professional pest management services.
"We established an organizational vision,
which was geared toward a broad goal that at
some point in the future, every household and
business will be protected by professional pest
management services," explained Ives. "It's a
broad goal-and honestly, the industry has
gotten used to thinking of 15 to 20 percent of
the households as real prospects, but it's more
significant than that."
According to PPMA research, the pest management industry has already grown by leaps
and bounds. "We've gone from approximately 16
percent of single family households buying some
kind of professional pest management services
10 to 12 years ago to over 30 percent today," Ives
added. "So we've had significant progress with
that goal over the years. Now we've expanded
our vision. When you think of it more expansively
and recognize the role our industry plays in protecting the food supply and all the channels of
the delivery of food and healthcare, everybody
is impacted in some fashion."
FOUR MAJOR GOALS
After creating a vision for the industry, the P3
Summit group got to work on setting some
specific objectives. "Once we reached our
vision, it came to identifying some categories
of goals that we would later flesh out with the
assistance of staff and committees and the
board," Ives explained.
After much brainstorming and discussion,
the group established the following four goals:
CONSUMER CONNECTIONS
GOAL #1 A growing number of consumers will actively seek protection
of their residences and businesses with pest management professionals.
